Hey there guys,
Sad to say but the sandbass migration and attendant wide-open fishing for the sporties is about over for much of southern California. Although San Diego counts are still fairly strong other species are starting to match their catch numbers.
I'd say San Diego/Oceanside areas have the best bite for the 1/2 and 3/4 day party boats presently.
Overnighters are another matter with fish, specifically yellowtail, being taken up and down the coast in good numbers.
Interestingly enough, it seems that there are tons of juvenile bonito everywhere. They first showed up at Catalina locally but can now be caught anywhere. Got a couple of 20 inchers yesterday off the coast at the rigs.
The amount of bait (anchovies) in the water is just amazing. What a wierd year. Species that are supposed to thrive in cold water are making their presence felt in 70 degree water!!
The last few days have experienced a lull in the catch totals for both sandbass and barracuda.
One or two yellowtail are being taken on the various local boats on a daily basis.
