Got out on Willard this morning with Ira and Alan around 7:30 am. We had plans to Bottom bounce but also put out some fligs to see if that would work better but the BBer ruled today. First fish of the day was a walleye and we were hoping that was the first of many but that was it. We did end up picking up 5 cats, the biggest was almost 24", all on night crawlers. We left around 2pm,water temp war 47 when we arrive and was up to 50 when we were getting off the water. I talked to a couple of bass guys that were working the shore line and they also got one eye today. My guess, with the warm up coming next week, the eye fishing will improve as well. No pics on this trip.

TubeDude use to make them, before he retired. They are floating jig heads that we drag near the bottom, we use 3/8 to 1/2 oz weights to keep them near the bottom and the Flig floats up from there. So for any fish that is close to the bottom they are ideal, depending on the length of the leader and the speed you are going, will dictate how far they float above the bottom. If we are after cats, we normally troll at .5 mph, for walleye or wipers we bump that speed up to .9 to 1.1 mph. There are many types, colors and styles of fligs, here are a few:

While you can't get a genuine TD Flig any longer, you can "make do" by threading a foam earplug on your line and snug it down against the hook knot.

Tip: Use a long cotter pin (or even a folded piece of thin wire). Thread your leader through the end loop, push the cotter pin through the ear plug, taking the leader with it.

While I don't make them anymore, I have left some PDF files that will serve as an explanation and introduction to "Fligonometry"...including how to make them and fish them.  Hope this helps.  Plus, here is a LINK TO VIDEO on flig making

FLIG SIZES SHAPES AND COLORS.pdf (Size: 2.95 MB / Downloads: 17)

  MAKING FLIGS.pdf (Size: 3.35 MB / Downloads: 27)

I’ve enjoyed Pat’s lessons and have a full set up in my man cave to make fligs and other lures, I have no desire to be the next tackle master or run a business. However, I would be happy to make fligs for anyone that needs them.

After making my post and reading yours, I might just take you up on making some if you have already gathered all the “Flig fixings” to make a few more.

I'm going to be out there Friday using the same strategy. What speed where you getting them on the bottom bouncers?

By small, I'm saying 3 inches or so but we have our best luck with cut up pieces of chub.
