Hopefully somebody here has some insight to this. My brother tells me that I need to register my canoe if I plan to use an electric motor on it. If that is true, would that mean that pontoon boats with electric motors would also need to be registered. Does anybody know about this?

Seems to me that any watercraft under motorized power needs to be registered, I thought it was up to a certain length but I bought a little aluminum boat last year that I put an electric trolling motor on and I registered it. I could be wrong, seems pretty silly but oh well.

Good question. I was at UL and ran into someone with a pontoon boat w/ a trolling motor and he said he was at Willard and the warden there said he would ticket him if he didn't register it so he did. I have an 8 foot Bass Raider with a trolling motor and when I inquired about registering it I was told it wasn't necessary. Much like a canoe. Seems there is some inconsistency of opinions. Of course, I'm sure it's in a reg somewhere.

Thanks, it seems strange that would be the case. The way I figured it was that anything that required a trailer to launch it would need to be registered rather than if there was a motor of some sort.

I used to have a 12' crawdad with an electric motor that I used to duck hunt out of, never registered it and had been checked by wardens multiple times and never once did they question the registration, I know in the regs. it says any motorized watercraft needs to be registered, I guess it depends on where you go and which C.O you deal with.

[cool][#0000ff]You are required to license any craft upon which you put a motor...gas or electric...even float tubes and pontoons.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]The fun begins when you go to DMV to get it registered. Most folks there have no idea how to do it or what to charge. Requirements, paperwork and pricing goes all over the place.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]On most waters in Utah, you will get a ticket if you have any kind of motorized craft without the proper registration numbers showing and current stickers.[/#0000ff]

I have two colman scanoes. If you put a motor on them you need registration, salt lake county is $26.00 a year for a canoe.,Make sure you tell them it is a canoe, they charged me 112.00 two years ago because they said anything over seventeen feet was a certain amount,of course I made a ruckus but still pay'd it,then I got a nice little refund the next year[ ].
Also make sure the bow number are the correct color, white if your boat is a dark color like green or red, black if it is white or a light color. you will get a ticket if they can't see it from a distance.been there done that.
hope this helped, motoring is much better than paddling any day. ![[Image: happy.gif]](http://www.bigfishtackle.com/images/gforum/happy.gif)

The law is that you HAVE to have any motorized water craft reg.
The fun begins when you go to the DMV. They ask for a title. You advise you dont but have a reciept. They then ask for the hull number. You look and advise them you dont have one. They advise you you need one for a title. Title? They then advise you need to have the police verify the hull number (that doest exist ). You then call the police and ask the dispatcher to fulfill your bizarre request. Cop comes around not sure what to do, you tell him/her you dont know either you just want to use your boat without getting hassles from the fish cops. He/she laughs, fills out the form with the hull number YOU created (BTW mine was DMV5364SUX) then its off to the DMV you go.
To be honest with you guys, it was easier for me to get my green card than to legally use my motorized pontoon!
BTW rippin-lips, I caught one 12" channel trolling a crank bait. Should have bought my anchor!

So that was you the other week. We had this same conversation. I kinda figured it was you putting two and two together with your accent and seeing your Allblacks logo on your profile. Sounds like I might need to register mine now. Either that or get some fins and hang off the back of my boat and use it like a kickboard. Did you get into the whities?

Registration, Numbering and Titling Requirements:
The Utah Boating Act defines a "boat" as every type of watercraft used or is capable of being used as a means of transportation on the water. Specifically, the definition of a vessel (boat) is as follows:
[ul][li] Definition of a Vessel (Boat):
[ul][li]A vessel (boat) is defined as every type of watercraft, other than a seaplane on the water, used or capable of being used as a means of transportation on water. In addition to traditional motorboats, vessels such as sailboats, personal watercraft (PWC), canoes, kayaks, rafts, float tubes and “kick” boats are subject to Utah’s boating laws and rules. [li]A motorboat is defined as any vessel propelled by machinery, whether or not the machinery is the principal source of propulsion. [li]A personal watercraft (PWC) is defined as a motorboat that is less than 16 feet in length, propelled by a water jet pump, and designed to be operated by a person sitting, standing, or kneeling on the vessel, rather than sitting or standing inside the vessel. [/li][/ul][/li][/ul]
![[Image: Registration2.gif]](http://www.boatus.org/onlinecourse/statelaws/Registration2.gif)
[ul][ul][ul][ul][ul][ul][li]Motorboats (including PWC) and Sailboats):
[ul][li]Sailboats and any vessel equipped with a motor, whether gas or battery powered, must be registered and numbered, unless exempt as noted below. A person may not place, or give permission for the placement of, a motorboat or sailboat on any waters of this state or operate or give permission for the operation of a motorboat or sailboat on the waters of this state, unless the motorboat or sailboat is registered. [li]Boats owned by Utah residents but registered out-of-state must be registered in Utah, if they are used on Utah waters. [li]U.S. Coast Guard documented vessels must register in Utah if they are used on Utah waters. This includes the proper display of both the Month of Expiration Decals and the Yearly Registration Decals. [li]Boats exempt from Utah registration include sailboards and properly registered motorboats and sailboats owned by residents of another state that have not been on Utah waters more than 60 days in a calendar year. [li]Boats exempt from numbering include sailboards, U.S. Coast Guard documented vessels and numbered motorboats and sailboats owned by residents of another state that have not been in Utah more than 60 days in a calendar year. [li]The annual registration fee is $25.00 plus a 50¢ search and rescue surcharge designated to go to your county of residence/registration. $4.00 of this registration fee is allocated to the Utah Division of Motor Vehicles for processing the vessel’s registration. The remaining $21.00 is allocated to Utah State Parks and Recreation to fund Utah’s Boating Program. [li]When you register your boat, a Registration card, two Yearly Registration Decals, and two Month of Expiration Decals will be issued. The Bow Number assigned to each boat must be displayed with the Yearly Registration Decals and the Month of Expiration Decals on the boat as described below. The Bow Number stays with the boat as long as it continues to be registered in Utah. [li]The Registration card must be carried on board the boat for which it is issued and be available for inspection whenever the boat is in operation. [/li][/ul][/li][/ul][/ul][/ul][/ul][/ul][/ul]

Thanks for all of your comments. I just called Davis County and they said that they'll take the serial number from the electric motor for registration. They said that the fee is $37.

Does that mean I can buy a motor, then register my motor and use it on the Drift Boat, Pontoon, and Tube? [ ]

Nope, the way I understood it is that they use the serial number for convenience. Maybe too many people have been hassled like Bounty Hunter was.

I talked to a ranger at East Canyon and he said once you put a motor (gas or electric) on anything you need to register it. I got stopped on the water on my toon, I had my numbers on kind of, most of them fell of the toon. The people at the DMV told me I had to put them on the toon and no where else. The ranger said don't listen to them and put them on a piece of wood or plexiglass and just hang it on it. He was cool about the whole thing.

No whities that trip. One fish for the whole day! Like I said, it was hard to stay in the weed line as the wind and waves from recreation boaters. I ended up trolling, which I imagine is a waste of time in those waters due to the murkyness.
I even steamed up the creek near the dump, which was super muddy and weedy. Not even a hit from the creek.
I think UL is done for me this summer, fishing gets hard from here on in to the fall, for me at least.
I want to hit Starvation in the next few weeks.

This late getting in, but yes you need to register it, and the fun begins when you go to the DMV to do so. It took the poor girl behind the counter about 45 minutes and several consultations on the phone and in person with two different supervisors to figure out mine last year. This year I will do it by mail and it will be done ASAP. Glad to know that others have had the same "fun" and "games".
