Oregon Fisheries Update

December 25th - December 31st, 2003

River fishing for chinook? Fall crabbing on the Columbia or your favorite coastal estuary? Go to this page and get your hands on lessons for these different fisheries and how to catch the hordes of salmon coming back this spring! Let us help you make the most of your outdoor experience!

The weather conditions will have rivers and streams up and down for the next week or so. If we get snowfall next week, the rivers will remain fishable until it melts. Chilly, but beautiful, prime conditions for winter steelhead.

Those holiday metalheads are being taken on the Wilson, Trask, Kilchis, North Fork Alsea, Clackamas and Cowlitz Rivers. The Sandy River stocks are all broodstock now which run later than hatchery-reared fish. expect steelheading to start up in January on the Sandy.

Crabbing has been good out of Hammond despite the commercial effort. Dungeness are also being taken at Tillamook, Netarts and Winchester Nays.

Sturgeon anglers are gearing up and a few are catch-and release fishing in preparation for the re-opening of retention on January 1st. Also opening on that date is the Columbia River and Washington tributaries for smelt dipping with a strong run expected.

Hampton Pond has been stocked this week.

Don't forget to purchase licenses and tags for the 2004 season, including the new shellfish license which is required for taking of all shelled critters, including sand shrimp for bait.

TGF wishes all our readers the happiest of holidays and a prosperous, chrome-filled New Year.
