atlantic salmon?
#1
any one here know why they call atlantic salmon "atlantic" I mean we find them on the pacific ocean, why are they not called pacific salmon?

Granted we have planted them in michigan great lakes and they do well even tho they never see salt water.... they just dont get as big as they do on the west coast. I think about a 10 pounds differance.

I believe that Atlantic Salmon is the only species in the Artic or Atlantic area. The scienticfic name for Atlantic Salmon is : Salmo salar. Also they return to the sea instead of dying off like it's counter parts Pacific Salmon.

Just an F.Y.I (For Your Information) there are six different species of Pacific Salmon:
Pink (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha)
Chum (O.keta)
Chinook (O.tschawytscha)
Coho (O.kisutch)
Sockeye (O.nerka)
Masou (O.masou).

that is the key reason michigan adopted the atlantic salmon for its fisheries, from what I hear they will spawn for 3-5 years before diening off.

michigan at one time had a snagging season on salmon, with the newly planted atlantic salmon there is no need for it. I am suprized at the number of people who didnt know that they go back in to the lake and come back in to the rivers to spawn each year.

I was astonished to find out that the atlantic salmon actualy live in the river for a year or two before heading out in to the big waters... This explains the numbers of returns increasing every year, with few preditors to munch on them they are getting a head start on the other salmon.... nature can sure throw in a monkey wrench when she takes a notion...
