What caliber is best for personal defense

Although I did not have this info to go by when choosing a handgun for personal defense, I came to one of those conclusions many years ago, use a gun that feels comfortable and one that I have no problem shooting. No, it wasn't a .22 or .32 cal. A lot of his conclusions make perfect sense to me though, even if there was no data to back it up.
