beautiful fish - PBH - 10-30-2015
Just had to share a picture of a beautiful fish. I sure love this lake -- and I love the fish in it too!!

Deep forked tail?

A deep forked tail would be something to look for on a lake trout.
brook trout have square tails
splake have moderate forks.
Picture is difficult to tell whether the tail is square or moderately forked.

As for what it is, my initial reaction was that there was sufficient tail forking present to say splake.

Splake is my guess. The tail appears to be "moderately" forked. The fins are lacking the black strip that brookies can be known for.
Brookies and splake can be so unique. That's what makes them a favorite of mine!

I caught a very similar fish, with the great colors as well just about 2 weeks ago. my initial reaction was how I love the color of Brook Trout, and their colors. The mouth on mine was nearly black.
But Fish Lake does not have Brookies, so it must be a splake.

It has the black strip on the fins -- look at the anal fin.
It also has the blue halos around the spots.
As some have already said, it is a splake. They can certainly be very confusing at times, and this particular fish was certainly a fish that could have
many anglers. It's always good to use multiple characteristics to distinguish the fish -- such as stocking records, spotting, coloration, tails characteristics, size, shape, etc.[signature]
