How to contol Shad populations - iamthesmf - 10-21-2015
Lake Mead has seen it's share of population control or say evolution in the fisheries.
There were Sliver Salmon in the 70's and early 80's.
Then the issue with too many Shad. Then Bass and Stripers were introduced.
The lasted or newly arriving biomass in the fishery is the Tilapia and Huge gizzard shad.
Tilapia reports from Arizona showed a 10 pounder via bow and arrow. Our tilapia are pushing 5-6 pounds and the Gizzard shad are not far behind.
So what should the powers that be introduce to combat/control the tilapia and big Gizzard Shad?
1. Alligator Gar
2. Flat Head Catfish
3. Tiger Muskie (sterile from a laboratory)

4. Bull Shark (also good for jet ski & water ski population)

Didn't know you guys had tilapia down there. I like the bull shark idea.[
]The only place in Utah that HD tilapia is a small lake out on the NevadaUtah border. Illegally introduced. DWR has a catch and kill order on them. I should go out and try my hand at them one of these days.

|we get the Tilapia with cast nets. Stained water is best as the dont see the net coming. ones and small ones, you are to kill them imedatly, not for bait unless dead.

We have had a lot of weird thing show at Lake Mead.
Pacu, piranhas, Crockadiles, tropical aquarium fish and those big suckered fish in at fish tank.

It's a problem in our local ponds to. This guy was only 12 oz but fought like a 2 lb bass.

Its an Oscar. They're South American cichlids, sold in pet stores everywhere. I've heard theres a few more in that pond and know of a large Tinfoil Barb was caught in the same pond.
