Trolling Motor Battery - psanders71 - 05-16-2015
On another note... Looks like I need to replace my trolling motor battery! I have a 16 ft., side console, aluminum boat with a 50 lb thrust Minn Kota.
I have read some decent stuff on the 29 series batteries from Walmart as a less expensive option... any suggestions out there?

I have been using them for several years. Haven't had any issues with them. May not last as long as the gel type battery but for the money they're pretty good.

I've had great luck with a deep cycle marine battery from autozone… 35 lb thrust. Bilge pump and fishfinder wired to it… I run a 2 amp trickle charge after every use and I understand that is key in prolonging the life…

I've tried lots of different batteries. I just get the Everlast Maxx from Walmart and I make sure I charge them immediately after use.. overall with cost and durability, they have been a little less expensive and they last nearly as long as the more expensive batteries.

I would say it depends on how much you use them and group size, I had 2 group 27 Les Schwab RV batts that lasted me for 7 years. I run a 24 volt Terrova and troll all day with it, I just replaced them with 2 Cabelas group 30 AGM all I can say is wow. Troll all day even in the wind and they still have 50% charge, My very first batts were group 24 and I could kill them in a few hours. Definitely charge as soon as you get home. The goal is to never let them completly discharge buy a batt big enough that you don't run it all the way down that will kill it fast.

I've run the Everstart Maxx group 29's from Wal Mart for over 15 years, with both 12 and 24 volt minn kotas. I recharge them over 100 times a year, and they last me about two seasons (240 fishing days). Can't beat that for around $100. Casual or weekend use should extend that by more than double. They have a 24 month free replacement if they fail too.

Group 31 if you can find them.
Use, charge, repeat.
Never let set discharged.
Maintain water level.
Buy from a dealer with easy to deal with warranty.
I hear Walmart has 2 year free replacement, no questions asked.
I've had some sterlings for 7 yrs now in my bass boat.
A good digital on board charger is just as important as the battery.
I'd use 6volt golf cart batteries if I had a bigger boat. Lol
