Thanks for all the great advice. I went out with a retired guide yesterday - Jonthecook - 05-15-2015 He spent an hour or so showing me a couple of basic knots, as well as going over some terminology. we practiced casting a little bit, but it was super windy so we weren't able to accomplish much other than give me just the basic idea of what is involved. Nevertheless, now i have a huge itch to get up on the river and try it out. He swore by the Orvis brand and recommended i go through them to get my setup. I've been looking around at different brands and setups, but haven't pulled the trigger. My dad has a cheap 70 dollar walmart rod that he bought forever ago, would that work for me to take out a few times and learn what i like and dont like, or am i better off getting something of higher quality to use?
