Backcountry Ice fishing - Captain_Hook - 02-06-2015
Hi There,
I was curious if any of you intrepid anglers out there have ever tried ice fishing high mountain lakes. I know that they could be very difficult or even dangerous to get to, but in some cases, possible...
Any thoughts?

Bloomington lake in SE Idaho might be perfect. Probably take more time to shovel down to the ice than it's worth. This year would be good to try with the lack of snow.

I did all the time when I lived in WY. Lots of lakes in teton park 2-3 miles each way on snowshoes pulling a decoy sled. By far my favorite ice fishing. Never once got skunked and only saw another person fishing one time. The ice can be strange. One lake I liked to fish had an inch of ice, a a foot of water and then twelve solid inches. Scared the crap out of me the first time it happened. Thought I was going to swim. One thing I would do differently (aside from not being alone, though its hard to find ppl who share the same drive to put that much effort into ice fishing) is walk with a spud bar on the lakes so the layers don't come as a surprise

I was curious about Little Redfish. It would be a fairly easy walk from the highway. Is it worth the effort?

Meadow lake on the way towards Salmon would be another option. Fun snowmobile ride up to. We have went up there in years past and not even had another hole cut in the lake. Nothing huge, maybe 14 at best but very pristine. Got to be close to 10,000 ft. You are right at tree line. Turn off is right after Gilmore Summit and before Dubois.

That is one of the ones I was curious about. What time of year were you there, and how much ice was there? I imagine that lake could really build some ice later in the season, but it probably freezes in early or mid november... with all the shade?

We would always go in January. Ice would be almost to the crook on the auger. Could be to thick any later. Probably not though this year being so warm.
