Anyone been to Yuba lately? - wiperhunter2 - 07-22-2014
Was thinking about making the drive down to Yuba but a few members are saying the catching is tough for the Northerns right now. Would it be better to wait until Fall after it starts cooling down? Thanks for any info.

We spent all last Thursday and Friday down there, stayed until dark both times. We threw everything in the tackle box at both Oasis and Painted Rocks with no luck. I'll probably wait until it cools off a bit before I head back.

I associate big esox with mid to late september - had some of my best luck by far during this time of year back in the midwest. cool evenings and dropping water temps usually get them going again .

Even with the hot temps last year the fishing was still good.... I have no idea what's happened this year, the waters way low but even when the water was up in the spring this year there still weren't nearly as many fish as the year before up in shallow and same with early summer.... There are still fish to be had but it ain't as easy as it was. There are going to be many disappointed anglers who head down there with the dwr hype and same with this winter.

[#0000FF]Simple math and biology. Two years of heavy publicity, heavy fishing pressure and heavy harvest will have consequences.
The pike got off to a good start after the drain and fill thing but had very little angler interest until DWR and the local media boys ramped up the coverage...and encouraged maximum harvest. Yuba is not a big lake and it is not a classic pike lake...with lots of structure and abundant forage species. Plenty of carp but not prime pike chow.
Some of the knowledgeable pike pokers predicted that the population would take a hit. Looks like they may have been right.
Still a lot of pike left in Yuba...but not as many dumb ones. Those that weren't taken home got a lesson in what to avoid. Not like the early days of wide open gullibility.
The upside is that now maybe the walleyes and the new perch plants might have a chance.

My wife and I have been fishing yuba a lot the last few years. Last year we did exceptionlly well in the early summer (end of )une, first week of July.)
Even last year though we had a tough go of it at the end of July, and had to put in a lot of work for a fish.
This year was much the same, we went early spring, mid spring, beginning of summer, end of summer. So far for us at Yuba the June fishing remains the best. This year we were able to pull in about 2-3 fish per hour in June, where last year that would have been 5-10 fish per hour. Now, its 1 fish every 90 minutes or so at best, and takes a lot of casting to find one.
Fall I get less fishing in as I have other outdoor activities that take up much of my time, so I will have a hard time speaking to the fall pike fishing.
