replace outboard motor - physion - 07-19-2014

I have a 12 foot Valco and am running an old 8hp, 2 cycle Evinrude. The motor is beginning to need maintenance more often than I'd like. I'm thinking about switching to a 4 cycle Yamaha. The 6hp Yamaha matches the weight of the Evinrude, and weight is a factor because I sometimes cartop the boat. Does anyone know how the performance of the two motors will compare? When I am by myself, I can get the boat up on plane or can troll down very nicely. I would want at least the same performance from of any replacement. Thoughts?

The only bit of wisdom I have is some 4 stroke motors don't like to be laid on their side. The manufactures don't recommend it on some. I know my Coleman said not to and I did once. It smoked bad and ran like crap trying to burn up the oil that leaked through the rings. Before you buy a 4 stroke make sure you can carry it when you car top. Ron

I used to truck rack top my little 12' aluminum and threw the outboard a 9.9 evinrude in the bed.. That got old fast so I bought a boat with a trailer... a 14' boat that can handle a bigger motor. Outboard motors are expensive so if I were you I'd look on craigslist for combos. 4 stroke engines are very quiet compared to a 2 stroke. Lots of options..
