What is this? - nkunz - 06-17-2014 I fished a new spot this weekend. I caught one small rainbow and 5 of these guys. Can any one tell me what they are. All were caught on flies retrieved just under the surface, casting to fish feeding on the surface. [signature] Re: [nkunz] What is this? - gmwahl - 06-18-2014 That's a Sacramento perch buddy. Kinda cool. [signature] Re: [gmwahl] What is this? - nkunz - 06-18-2014 I hadn't heard of them in Utah. [signature] Re: [nkunz] What is this? - gmwahl - 06-18-2014 Yup. Garrison reservoir out past delta and I've heard gunnison bend reservoir has them. If you didn't get them in either of those two lakes then I'd be interested where you got them. I suppose bucket biologists could have planted them anywhere by now. I've caught them before in California and that definitely looks like them. A little smaller and not as well defined, but still looks exactly the same as the ones we caught. Ive heard of them being in the state and thanks for posting pics of your trip!! I dont want to fish for them but i must say thats the first time i couldn't have identified a fish from utah!! Im sure you dont want to let to many know so just pm me. And was that the biggest one you caught? [signature] Re: [nkunz] What is this? - Fishrmn - 06-18-2014 I'm gonna guess Minersville. Some bonehead has put them in there before. They don't do well there. They don't compete well with Chubs, Trout, Smallmouth Bass, Wipers and Cormorants. It is a very small lake and though they may not belong there I don't want to be the cause for them being wiped out. If someone is really interested where they came from you can PM me and promises to leave them there I will answer the first few requests that I get. However, the lake is so remote that they are probably safe anyway. [signature] Re: [nkunz] What is this? - brookieguy1 - 06-18-2014 I won't bother you with where, but congrats. That's pretty neat. [signature] Re: [nkunz] What is this? - gmwahl - 06-18-2014 I was just interested, but don't need to know where. Have fun with them and enjoy your spot. Letting it out would let the lurkers loose on it and I'm sure they outnumber those of us who are active on this forum 100 to 1. I'm sure there are a number of spots with those that we aren't aware of and time will reveal. [signature] Re: [Fishrmn] What is this? - CoyoteSpinner - 06-18-2014 Now - any fish that can compete with a Cormorants has gotta be one tuff-ol finny! Cool catch. Look very different from our common Yellow Perch. Enjoy your precious, keep it safe, keep it secret! Fear of these fish being "wiped out" should be the last thing on your mind.... https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.217598131584540.66736.136959382981749 [signature] Re: [PBH] What is this? - castnshoot - 06-18-2014 I know of a small stream that comes out of an abandoned mine and disappears into the ground with in a hundred yards. They have been in that water for years. In southern Utah. [signature] Re: [PBH] What is this? - nkunz - 06-18-2014 This reservoir is so small that a cup full of rotenone would take care of the problem if there is a problem and there is no danger of them getting into any other body of water even with a 100 year storm. [signature] Re: [nkunz] What is this? - gmwahl - 06-19-2014 Regardless, they are in there apparently and hurting nothing so I would advise you to tell no one and enjoy it for all its worth as long as you can. There is always danger. Buckets can go a long ways!! [signature] Re: [PBH] What is this? - nkunz - 06-19-2014 If they are going to travel in a bucket this is not the only source. [signature] Re: [PBH] What is this? - bk1 - 06-20-2014 Go troll for trout!! And leave us alone!! [signature] |
