Cascade area report. 5/23-5/28 - hooknhunter - 06-02-2014

I was blessed to spend a week up in Cascade and boy, what a week it was.

Monday wasn't anything special. We were targeting perch and we caught some, including a couple larger fish, but they were hard to come by.

Tuesday I spent most of the day at Little Payette. I was targeting SMB's but hoping to tie into a Tiger Muskie. The water was crystal clear, with no wind. I could see down into the water at least 10 feet most of the time. I threw a spinner bait for several hours and only saw 1 fish. It was fairly large, but I'm not convinced it was large enough to be a TM, so I'm going to say it was a sucker as I know there are a lot of suckers in there about the size of the fish I saw.

Wednesday I went back to Cascade and focused on figuring out the Crappie. Once I finally got them dialed in I was able to catch about 20 keepers. I threw back about 10 others. All kept fish were in the 9-12 inch range.

Thursday I started the morning focusing on Crappie and caught a few, but I guess I fished out my spot or things changed, but I think I may have kept too many. I wish now that I had thrown a few more back. Around 11AM or so I moved locations and changed focus to perch again. I caught a SMB, so I changed gear and started focusing on those. I absolutely hammered the bass for about 4 hours catching 30-40 with less than 1/2 of those being under 14 inches. I fished all the similar structure I could find. Then I moved over to a different kind of structure to give that a try and hooked into a very large Tiger Muskie on my very first cast. He must have inhaled my bass lure because if was only a few seconds before my line was cut by it's teeth.

The next day (Friday) and I went back to my bass tactics, but didn't have much luck. On about my 4th or 5th cast, I could see a fish following my bait. As I reeled in in kept getting bigger and bigger. A good sized Tiger Muskie was following my bass lure and continued on right up to the boat. It sat there for 5-10 seconds about 3 feet from the boat, about 2 feet down, and about 8 inches from my lure. I jiggled my lure trying to entice the hit, but alas, he swam under the boat and out of sight. It was still cool to see that BIG TOOTHY fish sitting there staring at my bait.

Friday evening my wife and grand kids met me up there. I took the kiddies after small perch on Saturday morning and then spent the rest of the time with them on the bank.

It was a very nice week. Sorry, no pics.

sounds like a great week.
waiting to get back up there and hoping the SMB's will be on top water in a week or so. Do you remember the water temp at Little Payette ?

I don't have any way to read water temp. Sorry.

It was beautiful and clear if that helps any. [shocked][Smile]

When a tiger stops and will not hit your lure like that, I have found that sometimes doing a figure 8 in the water with your lure beside the boat can trigger a strike. It is crazy too because when they hit it they seem to come out of no where and it can really surprise you. Great report, thanks for sharing it with us.

Nothing would have made me happier than to have slayed them while we were together. But that's fishing. One day it's on, then next it's not.

Ironically, between the dock and where we were fishing together and then further up the channel from there, is where the crappie were hanging. A bit beyond that, is where I found to be the best perch fishing. We were basically right there the whole time and just running the boats past them. [:/]

The bass were in a much different location. I talked to a number of guys who were looking for bass and not finding them. I just happened to luck into a nice one while searching for perch and switched tactics. From there on it was history. The next day, only a few fish in the exact same locations using the same techniques.

I guess it just wasn't meant to be for us. But the dinner was awesome as was the company. Thanks.

Has Gloria forgiven me for putting you on youtube yet?

Yeah, she's forgiven you. Now we just need to figure out CJ and I need to find some walleye.[cool][fishin]

Nice report Dude.

I hope that long stretch of fishing recharged your batteries. It was great spending a few hours with you in your sweet new ride. Is it safe to say that you are now hell bent on catching a Tiger?

Thanks AA, but it will probably be next summer. It will be difficult to put my plan together this summer.
