Wanting to get into Steelhead fishing?? - flyfisher117 - 07-10-2013

Howdy all

I have been looking at getting into steelhead fishing. Im mainly a fly fisherman so I dont really know what to do as far as spinning gear goes. I dont have the money to get a new fly rod so I figured a spinning rod/reel would be easier to fund.

Can anyone make any suggestions towards a good solid entry level rod/reel. I need to run out to the shop and check out my dads rods but when he went to Alaska 10 or so years ago he bought two nice rods/reels. He told me if they would work to take them. Ill go check them out and report back on what I have.

Also, what kind of tackle does one use for shore fishing for steelhead? Ill have to go see what I have but I dont even know what too look at. Im well aware that it just depends on the season and the water and the conditions but generally what are most steelhead caught on? Large spoons? Spinners? Jigs?

Thanks all!

No one??

Well we thought the rods were in the shop. Turns out they are with the fishing boat down in another state. Looks like I will be buying a rod/reel.

Figured I would get a big game ugly stik or one of the salmon/steelhead ugly stiks. They are nothing special but for what they cost I figure they will give me a good start. Im just at a lost as to what reel to look at. I dont spin fish a lot but it seems that I ruin one spinning reel a year just on bass.

as far as tackle all I currently have are a bunch of silver spoons with little fake plastic egg sack looking insterts that my dad bought when he went salmon fishing in Alaska.

Sorry, but I've never been steele head fishing in my life. But I don't think you can go wrong with the Ugly Stick. As for the reel I just don't know. Any quality spinning reel should get it done I would think. Good luck[Smile]
