Back when I was in Utah and Idaho we would use more wax worms for ice fishing. The fish seem to prefer the appearance and tast of them better. If you plan on going alot the I would recomend [#000020]www.rainbowmealworms.com[/#000020] . They have a huge selction of meal worms in all sizes and waxworms too.

Their prices are real good for the quantities and their shipping is quick.

After many years of trying all kinds of bait,I find that small pieces of night-crawler work best for me day-in and day-out.It seems if they hit meal worms or wax worms then they will also hit earthworms. The crawler pieces give off more scent than the others,IMO.

I have a similar situation here in SoCal. The same stinkin bluegill will hit waxies one day and crawlers the next. I usually have to take waxies, crawlers and mealies on every trip to that spot.

When they decide not to hit either of them the I use a black rooster tail and that usually does the trick.

How about those power bait grubs? I have read about them and they should be really good.

Hi DaveTclown,

I have never Ice fished, I moved up from San Diego in July and there is not very much ice down there. I am looking to go for my first time on the 19th of Dec. I am taking a vacation from work, wish I was young enough to take it from school. Dan

play it safe, make sure you have at least three inches of the hard stuff befor you attempt to walk upon the waters.

you can walk on less, but genneraly the ice is not frozen evenly across the lakes. cary a spud to check it periodly and often.

where are you planning on drilling your first hole?

Pineview resevoir here in Utah. I also plan on using a pre drilled hole if I could. I do not have an auger yet, lets see if I like the sport first.

Dont forget to take a camera with you, you may never know when you may take that award winning pic's

there is some talk about an ice fishing derby so you may want to stay tuned in here to catch the details if and when they come out. Probably just after christmas.

I know James at Hooked fishing Tackle. a very good store that everybody needs to visit and purchase from, is having a ice fishing class on the 18th of December at 1800, that is 6pm for you land lubber types, at his store in Kaysville, UT. Then on the 20th we will all go fishing. Is that right HFT? I will take a camera and get some photos for you all.
