Muskie and pike on the fly - STEVEF39 - 04-02-2013
I spent most of the the last year on the river, I plan on fishing more lakes this year and really want to get into a muskie or pike on the fly. I just dont know where to start, what time of year to fish, what areas of the lake to fish or how to fish for them. I picked up a few fly patterns from the expo and I have a 7wt rod that I hope will work. If you can steer me in the right direction or would like to go out with me sometime on my boat let me know, PM's welcome, hope to give it a try in the next few weeks up at pineview.

i fish for them myself, personally, in the summer or on a warm spring day. tigers are ambush predators so i fish near structure. I like fishing a HUGE popper right next to the trees. many a times you will see a tree shake and them something like a torpedo attack your top water fly. pine view is a good bet, behinde the no wake line. there is a ton of structure to fish there and you might also pick up some decent bass on accident. as for depth and such, i have caught them both relativly shallow, and very deep. I got one next to the boat year before last that went 40+ inches while small mouth fishing a sinking line and clouser looking for smallies, and i was DEEP at the time, and in that same day i got one on top water. you should be ok with a 7 wt, i prefer an 8 or 9 because i throw huge articulated flies at them. as for pike i go to CO to hunt them and wall eye during the summer, there are a few lakes there managed very well for large pike, but i use the same tactics, only i use a 7wt and the flies are just a little smaller. not saying the big meat will not get them as well, just the way i prefer to do things.

I know it's been talked about before but what is proper handling for these fish and what kind of leader do you recommend, and thank you very much for all the info!

myself, i use a 20lb fluro leader when fishing top water, and a tieable steel leader when fishing streamers.... as for release techniques, do a search for K2's posts on tiger musky handling and release, she provides a good knowledge base, her techniques are more harware geared than fly fishing, but all of the principles hold true. as an example, a good strudy pair of very long needle nose pliars, a nice huge net, etc.
