Ellis steelhead - Tazasorus - 03-31-2013

Got to Ellis about 7:00 pm. Friday night. Not near as busy as expected. Talked to fish biologist and he said catch rates are horrible and not many more fish expected. So Saturday morning, bright and early we began pounding the water. And guess what? By the end of the day we had clocked 39 hours of fishing and had hooked 8 fish. For you guys that fish that area you know that those are not wonderful numbers, but if could have been a lot worse. Are you ready for this? Eight fish and we couldn't get one of them into the net. I don't know what bad JuJu we got into but quite frustrating. So Sunday morning back at it bright and early again, hooked our first fish at 11:00 and at noon we finished up our trip with a double hook-up all three fish being landed. Two weeks ago I landed my biggest Salmon steelhead I had ever caught at almost 31 inches. The fish biologist that was standing over us as we landed the last two fish was giddy with actually having some fish to check and do his thing on considering not much had been going on. I got a second personal best this time a 30 inch male. Pretty cool and worth the trip. By the way the weather was FANTASTIC and I am pleasantly roasted to a nice crispy redness! Great way to start out the spring[Image: happy.gif]

This gentlemen told me that 1150 fish were already in the hatchery and that there wasn't another big group of fish coming that they could indentify. He also said that they were scattered already all up and down the river. Who knows, weird season so far.

Do you know how many fish they need to meet their quotas? I kind of think there are not too many more down stream left to come. I hope I am wrong!

Did you speak with an actual biologist or was it one of the creel clerks?

If said "biologist" was checking fish he was clearly doing the creel survey. Double digit days far far below the pahsimeroi..........

You are right it was a creel survey dude, I just assumed they are all the same.

Creel guy also mentions that Tuesday-Friday had 150 fish a day come into hatchery.
