Where to buy anchovies? - HATH - 03-28-2013
Where can you get anchovies for powell? I've heard it's much cheaper to buy them up here than it is down there. How much would you recommend for chumming and trolling?

My experience has been just the opposite.
Buy them in Hanksville (at hole in the rock or one of the other places). They are less expensive there than at any of the shops up here.
I think we paid $2.89 per bag in Hanksville last week.
And they don't have to travel as far.

Also type might be important. If you buy them at powell, are they unsalted/treated? Or can you get frozen ones? What do people use down there?

last time i was there i got some frozen ones in a pack that weighed a pound and they werent salted and worked great, spendy down in page where i got them. 8.00 bucks a pack.....ouch

The one from the marinas and Hanksville are frozen and work great. I'd definitely go with just frozen and not treated.
Where are you going?
Last year even the ones at the marina's were cheaper than Cabellas.

Use anchovies for chum and sucker meat or chub to fish with..The sucker or chub will hold or stay on better.

Do yourself a BIG favor and buy them when you get there.
Apparently you've never used anchovies (or sardines) as bait. They need to be rock solid when you venture out, and I can almost guarantee you, (even if you completely bury them under ice), that, if you bring them from here, by the time you get to opening that bag in your boat, you'll regret your decision.
If you are going all the way to Powell, why mess it up?

In answer to your question on how much to buy, that is dependent on how long and how good the fishing is. If you land on top of a good school it won't take much to get them in. But if your searching for them, and/or you are knocking them dead you will go through a bag very fast. In order to keep them frozen solid, we use dry ice or rock salt. It will keep frozen solid as long as you keep the ice from evaporating/ melting. Have fun, can't wait till June when i head down that way!

Call and get price were the cheapest i get mine at sportsmans. When chumming dont chop them up and throw them to the side buy a mesh bag most dollar stores have them then chop up the anchovies and put them in the mesh bag.Shake the bag every so often you want to create a scent trail they will follow it and have minnows on your hooks instead of anchovies i have caught tons of stripers this way i usually drift but if i am at moki wall i anchor and do the same .Hope this helps you.

Is that legal @ Powell? We use to do something Similar when I lived in San Diego only we chuck pieces of fish and have a bag near the boat.

You are allowed to chum with only anchovies create a chum slick and the fish will come and hang around as long as you feed them don't create a drive thru for them . Lol I keep a rod with fluorocarbon handy and free line it to them stripers have great vision .
