Rod building - STEVEF39 - 03-22-2013
Finally got the epoxy on the rod. It wasnt as hard as I thought it would be and came out pretty good for my first time.I found out why it is so important to get the thread cut as close as possible though, but it still looks great. Looks like it will need another coat after this one dries and then find some 2wt line and off to test it out. What line should I get for this rod, will be used mostly for the uinatas, small streams and panfish. Dont want to spend a ton on line for this rod. Cant wait to build another [cool]

I love that Cobalt Blue. Very clean job there.
As for lines, I prefer Orvis Superfine for my 2 wt. Thin taper.

You could also look at SYLK which is also a thinner taper.

Very nice, I finished a 4 weight 10' a few weeks ago, came out pretty good. The epoxy is always a little tricky, getting it a little too heavy or air bubbles.

Love the simple one-color wrap. That's elegant.
I took flygoddess's advice about my 3-wt and bought an Orvis Superlight line. I like it a lot so far. I don't know if you'd call $79 cheap or expensive, though.

Seems like 60-80 is the going rate these days for a decent line.

Looks great. Have you tried using the single part epoxy from gudebrod that comes in a squeeze bottle? I use it on all of my rods and I like it alot more than the stardard 2 part because I got tired of the air bubbles. I can coat an entire rod in 2 days or less with the one part and that is with multiple thin layers to build it up so you don't get the foot ball shape on the guide wraps and ferrules.

No but ill have to look into that on my next one, I didnt have very many bubbles at all, just a few on little ones on one of the wraps.

Will have to try the 1 part, did not have any real problems with the two part other then like you said got a little bit of a football shape on the tip top, all the other guides looked pretty good. What kind of a shelve life does that 1 part have once you start using it ? Pretty fast drying ?

I've used mine for a couple of years after I opened it and I can put the first coat on it and after 3 hours it is dry enough to add another coat. I have put 3 on it in one day and I generally do 3-5 depending on the guide and how thick or thin I apply the epoxy. Also you can apply it with a nylon bristle brush and if you drip any on yourself or a work surface it will clean up with warm water if you catch it before it dries. Once it has dried completely it is waterproof just like 2 part epoxy is.
