Bear River, Black Canyon Access - Georgia_guy - 03-03-2013

Today was so nice we just had to get out and find some water. We started at the Lower Portneuf access above Lava. Water was a little high and muddy, but what do you expect this time of year. We tossed a few lures in but no serious fishing. I had one 10' follow a Panther Martin to the shallows but nothing else. Leaving I got stuck in the snow in the parking lot. It took about 30 minutes of digging (love those E-tools), rocking, and clawing inch by inch but we got out. After lunch in Soda we took the kids to the Grace Fish Hatchery and admired the big ones stacked in the outflow pond. We have never done much on the Bear River so we headed to the Black Rock Canyon Sportsmen's Access for a look around (photo below). The water looked good, and I like the terracing of the water. We were wondering what kind of success folks have had there. Anybody want to share?

The further up on the portneuf the better the water gets, but with kids its a little rough. Told you we still have snow over here in lava. The spot you have pictures for black canyon, is a pretty fished area,. But lots of smaller cuts to be had there.

Black Canyon gets stocked pretty heavily with rainbows, and as was mentioned, there are some cutts in the mix. Also some big carp and suckers. It gets a bit on the warm side and very mossy in the warmer months, plus the flows are heavier, so winter, early spring and fall are the best times to fish it.

As has been said Bear Canyon has been stocked with rainbows and now some cutts too.

Be careful there, and use a wading stick if you go. It can be dangerous. All of those terraces are lava and there are holes in it that get covered with weeds or loose mud. A dunking or a broken leg are equally possible. I've done the dunking part.

In the later spring they do kayaking water releases down the canyon. 900 cfs instead of 70 cfs. They do show the schedule on this site, but they must be updating it as it is blank right now. http://www.pacificorp.com/es/hydro/hl/br.html#
Be sure and check it before you go.

This is what it looks like:
