First Fish On A Fly - the_cactus_kid - 06-17-2012

Took up learning how to fly fish on Silver Creek this week. Figured since I'd be here for two weeks, I ought to learn how to swing flies. Of course, everyone said I'll get my butt kicked on Silver Creek - it's not ideal for rookies.

Oh well, I'm sure that's true. I've caught a couple, and missed a few. Having fun anyway, and starting to get the hang of it.

A little brown, but boy was I happy to catch something!

Hey congrats on getting that first fish on a fly! The next step is tying up your own stuff and getting them on flies that you tied for yourself, definitely gratifying.

What made you think that Silver Creek would be the place to start?[cool] I haven't gotten the confidence to try Silver Creek yet. Probably all of those fishing articles talking about spending all day stalking a single trout, making 90 ft casts with a three weight, and fishing size 26 flies that has scared me off thus far. Maybe I will have to give it a try sometime. I know it is beautiful.

Nicely done! Fly fishing is addictive, I still remember my first on the fly. Yours was a brown on reputable water. Mine was an 8" stocker on the boise. You win hahaha

Nice! My first one on the fly was caught by accident on the Teton. I was learning the basics and had a whopping 3 incher take my fly.

@ StickRig: haha, you caught me! The title of this thread was misleading. Technically, the first fish I caught on a fly was this one...(help me out veterans - is this a brown trout minnow, or what?)

I can't see it well enough to be sure, but there doesn't look like there is any adipose fin. So not a trout.

Some kind of very hungry minnow!

Bumping this back to the top because I just had to share my 2nd fish on a fly (3rd if you count the minnow!). This big brown made my 3 wt. rod bend for a good fight. Now I feel like I really caught something on Silver Creek!

Good goin! Silver Creek is tough water to fish, but very rewarding when you do well.

Starting fly fishing on Silver Creek is sort of like starting mountain climbing on K2! It's all downhill from here on out. Congrats. Mike

Cindy, it's a brown. If you look closely, the adipose is slicked back. Probably because it's in a net. Greaser fish from the '50's.

Thanks all for the kind words. If you head Silver Creek way, stop in and talk to Bob at the Picabo Convenience store. He's very helpful, and sells you the right flys.

Thanks for clearing up what kind of a minnow that was. I just noticed it had a pretty bright orange stripe. Is that unique to browns?

Good job on seeing that. I am not sure that I can see one. It certainly has a brown's appetite that fly is bigger than its head!

It looks a lot like a shiner considering the other fins and no spots, but I am not a baby fish expert. I usually backcast most of the little guys I catch. Then I scramble around looking for the little buggers! Smile
