IT WORKS - flygoddess - 04-09-2012 This last Saturday at the Expo, I met up and talked to Justin from Allen's Fly Fishing. We talked of rods and I mentioned I prefer a Mid flex. He hands me the a ATS. This thing is not only beautiful it is smooth as butter. I had to have it, do I got the 9' 6wt. 4 piece and I loaded it up with the Red Allen Trout Reel. ![]() Lately I have been addicted to Carp, but I have been using an 8 wt. I remember back with TD I landed four large carp on a 6 wt Glass rod, so I had to try the ATS. This was the first one landed but the second fish as the first one was HUGE and stood straight up out of the water and a mity shake threw the barbless hook. That thing was big. I have never seen a carp do this. I mean straight up, whole body. Anyway I landed a few and I am stoked about this rod. 32"er ![]() [signature] Re: [flygoddess] IT WORKS - SatanLBZ801 - 04-09-2012 That new setup is SICK! The fish are going to see that red and be scared off though! [ ![]() [signature] Re: [SatanLBZ801] IT WORKS - flygoddess - 04-09-2012 OH man and the fight is insane. 5 might be pushing it. You really need to muscle at some point. I was using 10 lb fluoro of a 6' furled. I think you are right about the red cause every time I got it close enough to net, they took off again. Of course I am wearing a chartreuse sweat shirt as well LOL I have never been one to wear camo, but I will crawl. [signature] Re: [SatanLBZ801] IT WORKS - TroutBumDave - 04-09-2012 I have a 4 wt Browning that I use regularly, and have caught many a' carp on it. I figure it's a good excuse to buy a new rod if a giant fish breaks it, but it has withstood the test of time. I've probably landed 50 carp on it this year, the biggest was 7 lbs. and 31". [signature] Re: [TroutBumDave] IT WORKS - flygoddess - 04-09-2012 Well, there you go. I just know it took a lot longer on the 6 wt then it did with the 8...LOL Basically you can land big fish with small rods as you should be fighting with the butt section. Just that it also causes exhaustion on the fish, but hey, these are carp! LOL Cockroaches of the sea [signature] Re: [TroutBumDave] IT WORKS - flygoddess - 04-09-2012 [quote TroutBumDave]I have a 4 wt Browning that I use regularly, and have caught many a' carp on it. [signature] Re: [flygoddess] IT WORKS - fish1on - 04-10-2012 Nice nice nice How much is a setup like that? I have an 8 weight stillwater I bought just for wipers, Bear lake cutts and an occosional carp or two. Only fish has been the carp on the beach at BL as of yet but waaay fun. I have two reels set up with floatin line and one for sinking, spool change out is not an option with the Trion reels [frown] Floating line on the carp and maybe a wooly?? [signature] Re: [flygoddess] IT WORKS - STEVEF39 - 04-10-2012 Cant wait to get my new allen rod hope its here by saturday for my trip to strawberry! [signature] Re: [flygoddess] IT WORKS - flykid801 - 04-10-2012 What a nice setup! It's beautiful! [signature] Re: [fish1on] IT WORKS - flygoddess - 04-10-2012 It is under $300 for rod and reel. Sadly there was a show price. I was using an 8 wt for my Carp. I just got this rod Sat so I had to try it. I already had the reel. As for the 8 wt. I bought the Sage 230 grain line on sale at Sierra Trading post for $29. It is very short heavy head and cast fantastic. Even 4" streamers. I use a 6' furled leader with 3 to 4 feet of tippet. I attach one fly to the end of the tippet and the other fly off at tag of maybe 12" tied about 3' up from bottom fly. [signature] Re: [flygoddess] IT WORKS - kandersonSLC - 04-10-2012 Yeah, Justin was offering such good prices at the Expo that I likewise had to pick up two of their Myth rods -- a 9' 6wt and an 8.5' 4wt along with a red Trout Reel (like FG's). Allen's products are pieces art. I know you can't "buy" a cast, but mine sure feels (and looks) better with both of these rods. Have to go to Vegas tomorrow on business but I'm hoping to hit Strawberry on Saturday and break them in. [signature] Re: [flygoddess] IT WORKS - TroutBumDave - 04-10-2012 No, no, no... The Fenwick doesn't have a wt stamp on it, but I assume it's an 8. I'm talking about my Browning rod. Picked it up at a yard sale for 5 bucks; best five dollars I've ever spent. Actually hit The Spot today with Colby D and we both hooked into a few dandy fish. I had a 20 minute fight with probably the biggest one I've hooked there. I couldn't get him out by conventional means, so I had to try and 'gill' him... bad idea. Snappy-snap went the line. He was easily 30+, and CD and I agree that the state record is in there, and I think I may have lost him on that broken line. [signature] Re: [TroutBumDave] IT WORKS - flygoddess - 04-10-2012 Right On. These other two spots I have been hitting 30+" But I to had one that came out of the water enough to say at least 36". OMG wait till May and the spawn! Hey and you didn't call me??? [signature] Re: [flygoddess] IT WORKS - gstott - 04-10-2012 That's a beautiful rod, I love trying out new gear trips. I've always used a 6wt for carp, it's quite the battle. Like you said, they're carp, so exhausting them isn't going to hurt anything. [signature] Re: [gstott] IT WORKS - flygoddess - 04-10-2012 But I should say without trying to sound like I am bragging as it is my only 9' 8wt. but it is a BIIx which weighs less than most 4 wts...LOL Wouldn't you use it too? LOL [signature] Re: [flygoddess] IT WORKS - gstott - 04-10-2012 Oh I would use it. That's crazy how light it is. I still might even use my 8wt now that I have one if I was getting into 30+" fish. I may have to go after some carp soon, I haven't done that in years. [signature] Re: [gstott] IT WORKS - flygoddess - 04-10-2012 Give a shout! [signature] Re: [flygoddess] IT WORKS - gstott - 04-11-2012 I'll do that. After this month my schedule should really open up and I plan on fishing as much as I can. [signature] |
