Starvation open water? - bowhunter82 - 03-01-2012 I was hoping to head up sunday and fish some open water, I have read a few reports of open water at the marina and Rabbit gulch but I don't want to waste the drive up there. Anybody been up the last few days to see the current conditions? Thanks [signature] Re: [bowhunter82] Starvation open water? - CROSSINEYES - 03-01-2012 marina refroze. sali is still solid as well. but from the sandy beatch to the damn is open. The main boat ramp has open water and there is a large area of open water to the west of the ramp and then 30+ feet wide stip of open water along the shoreline toward the dam. Saleratus still looks locked up. The large area of open water between Indian Bay and Bunny Gulch is expanding fast now. There is a lot of open water in the front of the Gulch but there is still ice at most launching locations. It would be possible to launch a very small boat from Old Highway 40 into the narrow ~12 foot strip of open water that runs east along the shoreline. The edges in the Gulch go from open water near the Old Highway 40 access, very soft edges mid way and then somewhat solid edges at the back of the Gulch. With the W and warmer temps. expected for the next few day, there should be plenty of open water by sunday. We have been considering one more trip to the upper end of Rabbit Gulch and it looks like that might be possible with an 8 foot plank. I assume the conditions are still OK above the Highway 40 bridge. Is that how it looked to you this morning? I didn't take a close look at the edges this morning though. [signature] Re: [hookngrinin] Starvation open water? - albinotrout - 03-01-2012 Woohoo! Softwater coming. [signature] Re: [bowhunter82] Starvation open water? - GorgeHound - 03-01-2012 The trouble with launching when there is still large sections of ice floating around is if conditions are just right, they can move and block access to the launch area on your return. Had it happen and it was NOT fun getting my boat back out.. Good luck.
