Professional Advice - FishingRookie - 02-24-2012
I have been looking to get a 3wt fly rod for some time now and have narrowed it down to 2. The St. Croix Imperial and the TFO Lefty Kreh Pro Series. Both are 4 pc and 7'6"
What are your opinions of these rods? What would be a good reel to throw on the one you pick? Or do you have a better rod/reel combo for me? I would like to stay around $300 for the whole set-up (or should I say that's all the wife will allow[

the TFO is a great rod. Also take a look at Allen Fly Fishing DOT Com. he makes some killer rods and amazing reels.

I have a buddy who has the St Croix, and I have the BVK TFO 3wt. The St. Croix has a bit faster action. Really that is the only difference I can see between the two. The BVK I have is an 8' rod, and I like the extra length. The BVK is supposed to be a faster action rod from TFO, but the St. Croix is still a bit faster. Don't expect any real distance out of the 7'6", not that having an 8 footer makes too much difference, but it does help.
All in all, I would go with the St. Croix, I don't think you would regret it. My friend also matched his rod with an Okuma SLV reel. They are a pretty inexpensive set and fit well together.

I would check out the redington voyant. St. Croix rods are nice but with the warranty change I personally wouldnt buy one. I would say redington or TFO.

A three weight, I would look at the TFO, but the Finesse, not the Pro. The Finesse is lighter too.
TFO PRO: 03 76 4 P 3 Wt. 7'-6" 4 3.0oz IM6 Graphite
TF Finesse 03 79 4 F 3 Wt. 7'-9" 4 2.8oz IM6 Graphite
The Redington are pretty light as well:
Classic Trout 3 Wt. 7'-6" 3 2.3oz
Voyant 3 Wt. 7' -6" 3 2.5oz
And yes you can cast far with a 7'6" rod. I have cast 80' with a 7' Bamboo.
