Best Lure/Bait for Strawberry? - rgreenland - 12-24-2011

Planning on hitting Strawberry. I typically hit Rockport, East Canyon, Echo, Mantua...and the like. I have not fished Strawberry through the ice for several years.
While I have all the standards for the other waters...tipped with a maggot (or whatever you prefer to call them)....I am not sure that all of that will be sufficient for Strawberry.
I do like the Maniac lures that I use.

What do you like to use....and have had success with...at Strawberry?

Tube jigs (white, glow (white, pink and blue), chartreuse, black and crawdad) tipped with cut chubs, shiners and meal worms has never let me down. Sometimes, tipping with a crawler will work. Paddle Bugs will also work, but I lose more fish, because of the small hooks.

Hard to find anymore but my go to at Strawberry is a white foxxy jig. Last year was my best year ever ice fishing and I didn't hit the Berry once. I'm just sayin.........

[cool][#0000ff]I don't fish Strawberry myself, but I tie marabou jigs for several guys who like to have those available in their arsenals on any given trip. Sometimes the sexy action of marabou entices bites when plastic ain't gettin' it.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Best colors are white...with glow heads...and chartreuse with glow heads. And the hooks should be sharp and larger than the wimpy little crappie jigs. You need room to add a big chunk of minnow and to hook and hold a large cutt.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]One of the color combos I have been making for several years is the "yellowtail white". It was originally requested that I tie them as "Strawberry Specials". They used to be sold as such by a few places.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Actually, marabou jigs in all the standard "summer" colors work well too...black, green, brown, etc. The fish are still feeding on aquatic invertebrates so anything representative will get bit. And because the fish can get selective and finicky, it is a good idea to have some very small bluegill sized 'bous too...or some very small tubes.[/#0000ff]

White foxee's with the pink eye in the 1/16 oz size used to be my go to jig up there. They quit making them about 5 or 6 years ago. Luckily a few years back I found an online store going out of business and bought a bunch of them!!!

I have had more success lately with Maniac cutter bugs and gizzy bugs in glow though.

I might be willing to see some of those foxee's if you are interested.

The silky chartreuse 1/16 oz paddle bug is my go-to. Tipped of course with a piece of minnow. Two days ago I did pretty well on this. Action was steady and I never needed to change lures. If they were in the area, they were biting. I think the jig itself is less important. They're just looking for the meat.
