Lake Mead Sunday - BaySport - 11-21-2011

Sunday, 11/20/11- Lanched the old aluminum boat off the shore of Gov't Wash at about 6:00 am. Three trucks with empty trailers already line the bank. I must be late. Time to motor over to the Las Vegas Wash.

The Wash. A nice calm day for netting shad.

[inline "11-20-11 002.jpg"]

No electric trolling motor, no fish finder, no live well. A push pole, oar, and a bucket, I'm feeling like Huck Finn! So there I am, pushing the open boat in shallow water, jumping up on the center bench when I see shad to toss the net. I wish Injun Joe was here to pole for me.

Lucky for me bait was plentiful. Only came close to falling off the bench once.

Shad ready to go to work. Don't overload the bucket or they won't live long!

Live bait striper caught while drifting in the calm waters of the wash.

More small live bait stripers.

Wind comes up fast, time to head back to Gov't Wash. What a great time on the water!

Awesome man! I don't see any gizzards, but good work finding the bait. Looks like it was a beautiful day.

Awesome,

I almost went but the weather guessers on the news got the better of me and never went this weekend other than Floyd Lamb (caught a pile of Rainbows).

I have a throw net in the boat but have yet to even break it out of the oem box and try it. Nor have I fished with live bait before. How does one rig them up? What size/type of hook, weights, etc. Weight on the bottom or hook on the bottom of the set-up? Slipper weights? Totally lost on catching them with anything other than cranks of somesort.

You can fish them weightless (fly-lined) or you can fish them either on a dropper rig or a carolina rig.

For a dropper rig, I like to hook the bait through the lips so it looks natural and alive.

Fly-lined or carolina rig, hook the shad through the back right in front of the dorsal fin.

Use 1-2oz of lead for your dropper, 1oz for your carolina.
You'll want to use a quality circle hook in the 1/0 range, or a super sharp octopus style hook.

I hope this is enough to get you started.

No gizzards that day! All the gizzard shad I net are taken home and froze for cut bait season.
