RED FLEET WALLEYE - PACKFAN - 07-05-2011

I watched Roughing it Outdoors the other night and noted that they are encouraging fisherman to catch and keep all walleye caught there. They were running gill nets and catching a few nice fat eyes. They are talking about possibly draining the lake down some and poisoning it to kill the walleye and restocking it with slimers, bass and bluegill I guess. Has anyone ever tried the eyes there? [font "Courier New"][#0000BF][size 3]I heard about this last year (or maybe the year before?). I got all excited about a no limit on walleyes would LOVE to go and try for some... but it's a 3+ hour drive. The only way it would be worth it for that, is if I spent a few days - which means either motel or camping. Plus, being just me, I'd be stuck to shore, and I figure there's a better chance for fishies from a boat.

But hey, if anybody wants to take me for a little vacation over there and help me harvest 'eyes, I certainly wouldn't mind! Heck, I'd even drain some of my savings account for it (probably couldn't bring much more than $200)

i heard about some nice walleyes in their a year ago as well, if you fish it Pete you will have to burn your boat before you leave[Wink] i think it is infected with AIS.

I haven't fished it Pete, but I have a few buddies who have with not much luck on the eyes. So far gillnetting has been the most consistent method. [Wink]

I hope the UDWR doesn't go through the expense and time to renovate Red Fleet. [:/] Seems to me there are other higher priority programs that could use the attention and funding.

Re: [PACKFAN] RED FLEET WALLEYE - skeeterfishn1 - 07-06-2011

Hey Pete, I googled red fleet the other day cause I also saw roughnit and what I found is very little. There were talk of the rocky mtn anglers trying to get some kind of class going up there. There was some talk of a few caught shallow on jigs and some on spinner rigs. I would like to get up there and try it but ran in some financial snags so not sure when I will make it, possibly in the fall. I think they will decontaminate allboats leaving the water. I think I will call them and report back.

I called Redfleet and they do the decontamination as you leave and she said it doesn't take very long. She also said they have to run back and forth from stienecker and redfleet to decontaminate so some time they have to let you go with out it. I personal feel they could decontaminate my boat if not I would use the drying method before launching again. That mussel problem is a real serious problem! Unlimitted walleye would be great but I got to be able to catch'm first!

Redfleet phone number is 1-435-789-4432.

I fished Red Fleet for a few hours last Thursday and didn't get a bite. We were exclusively targeting the walleye. I didn't see anyone else on the lake catch anything either.

Were you in a boat? If so what was the water temp and were you jig fishing?

There is no way I would dock a boat in that dirty lake. We just fished from the shore from various different spots. We used multiple different lures and only had what looked like some small mouths follow in our lures.

I know what you mean I have been wondering about the muusels too. I'm not sure they could do a 100% decontamination but I thought if a didn't turn on the live wells just fill them with ice then they decontaminate it and I dried it for 10 days in the hot months, but even then i'm not sure.

North of Vernal, roughly. I spend a lot of time in the basin and it WAS on my to do list but there are so many places to fish and so little time.

Re: [PACKFAN] RED FLEET WALLEYE - luvtohunt - 07-07-2011

We were talkin to one of the "decontamination guys" the other day and he said that they are thinking about taking Red Fleet off the list for mussles. I guess they had only found 1 on a boat leaving the lake from another state and haven't seen any more with the decontamination process. It only takes a minute and Red fleet is a really pretty lake. It's like a mini George. We did pretty good on the rainbows up there but I want to learn how to catch the eyes and go back!

Re: [PACKFAN] RED FLEET WALLEYE - submoa - 07-07-2011

I was surprised that they didn't mention anything about the muscles on the episode. With all the prevention going on these days I thought they would have brought it up. It's the primary reason I'm not putting my boat in that lake.

Re: [submoa] RED FLEET WALLEYE - CRB - 07-08-2011

Not alot of walleye, different age groups so they are increasing. Our best day was 7 in the 16 to 18 inch range. Yes you need to shower before you leave, can be a pain if your last in line.
