Starvation launch sites - Bowcutt - 06-27-2011

My brother and I have not fished Starvation for too many years to remember (30?) and we want to fish for trout and anything else that will hit a fly or lures.

Are there any other places to launch besides the main ramp? Our boat is a small 14' aluminum with a 4 horse ob. We don't have any idea where to fish except maybe in the shallower bays. Are there any other inflows besides the Strawberry river/

Any help and advice would be appreciated. We are planning on tomorrow.

All areasre good to launch, water is down about 10'. Good place Knight Hollow or Rabbit Gulch

I'll second that. WIth a small boat both Rabbit Gulch and Knight Hollow are good places to launch.

Is it possible to get a 30' trailer down any of those places? We've always just hit Indian bay but the park is talking about closing it down due to their not being enough activity in that area. Kind of crazy to me but. Was always curious of how accessable other parts of starvation were for a fairly good sized trailer.

It would be difficult at Knight Hollow to get that big of a trailer in there. I think it would be doable at Rabbit Gulch.

Looking back at some older thread, I see a bunch of trailers down at Rabbit Gulch. Can anyone point me to which road they're taking to get down there? I would HATE to take that big of a trailer down the wrong road and not be able to get back. And if anyone knows how the water level is over there this year. If there is spots to camp.

Are there signs directing traffic to the roads to Knight Hollow or Rabbit Gulch? I have a map of the res. and it shows a few roads to the different areas but don't know what to look for. This is kind of an exploring trip.

The road off of the highway coming in from Strawberry, turn off is before bridge. If you go to Knight Hollow the road by the gas station. You can launch both areas. Last weekend they were loading boats both areas.

[cool][#0000ff]You have already been provided with a couple of my maps for Rabbit Gulch. Look for the unmarked turnoff road about 1.1 mile past the turnoff to the Strawberry River as you approach Starvation. There will be a row of mailboxes on the south side and a left turn lane to turn onto the frontage road on the north.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Here are a couple of maps to help with Knight Hollow. Basically, you start into Duchesne and there is a paved road and a sign to the State Park. But instead of turning back toward the NW on the paved road, take the gravel road up over the hill and stay on it until you can see the lake to your left. That will be Knight Hollow.[/#0000ff]

You guys are awesome. So looking at the pay station, Rabbit Gulch is also a fee area for camping/day use?

[cool][#0000ff]Every place around the lake that you can access by vehicle is considered State Park...and there are daily fees assessed...with an "iron ranger" to collect the money. No free launch. Having an annual pass helps.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Just for the record, the access points are Rabbit Gulch, Indian Bay, Main Park & Ramp, Juniper Point and Knight Hollow.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]There are a few remote access points around on the back side of the lake reachable by wandering around on the oil company roads. Difficult to follow on maps and sometimes hazardous to anything besides high clearance and 4X4 vehicles. [/#0000ff]

Re: [TubeDude] Starvation launch sites - Bowcutt - 06-29-2011

Thank you all for your help. We drove straight to Knight's Hollow and were able to launch without a problem next to the inlet canal.

My brother landed 5 rainbows from 14" to 19" while I got one 15" smally. All fought good but we didn't get there until noon and the wind got us before we could enjoy the evening fishing.

More details on the trip.

My brother had a bright red fly already on his rod so started with that and it turned out to be the only fly that caught any trout. Any flies we thought were close enough to the same didn't even get a bump.

We drifted with the wind casting and stripping and they definitely seemed to prefer the stripping to a steady retrieve.

The fly looked like a #6 Carey Special with bright red crystal flash tied generously on the body. I caught the smally on a "look alike" that wasn't as bright. The shape might suggest a dragon fly nymph.

I don't think we will try it again until the weather cools off in the fall.

Beautiful reservoir with lots of interesting sights. Glad we went.
