North Marina - No Excuses - TubeDude - 06-15-2011

[cool][#0000ff]FlyGoddess had another Wednesday off and wanted to fish Willard again. We had planned to meet at the south marina but forecast for south winds early kinda altered the outlook. We opted to return to the north marina.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I was thinking that an early wind might still mess things up. Might make a good excuse if we didn't do well. Then I looked over to the west and saw a big chunk of cheese (moon) sliding below the horizon. GREAT! Another potential excuse. We might get "mooned".[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I was first there and first launched...about 6:30. Air temp 60 and water temp 66. Mo bettah. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I started for the channel to fish it and the area right outside. Dragged a minnow on one rod and pitched plastics with the other. No fish on sonar in the channel. Hmmmm. Very unusual. No fish outside either. No bonks on either bait or tube jigs.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Talked to FG as she launched and told her it was kinda slim on the outside so she decided to go play with the crappies inside the marina. Good move. I wasted about an hour with only a couple of dink crappies near shore on the outside. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]After Joni reported pretty fair action on some nice crappies inside I motored in to help her so that she didn't overfun all by herself. What a guy? Right?[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I reached the spot I wanted to start fishing and dropped my tandem jig rig to the bottom. About my second jiggle-lift something hammered me. FG had been on the way over to show me a nice 13 inch slab she had just landed and I wanted a picture of it. But, even though I am a gentleman I made the lady wait while I let that wiper abuse me. That's the way I roll. Deal with it.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Got pics of Joni's crappie and my wiper and then we went separate ways again. That lady really smoked the slabs today. Gonna have to change her name to CrappieGoddess. She caught a grundle but was not keeping any.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I caught quite a few. Not as many as the goddess lady, but I got variety. Besides the wiper I also found a silly kitty that liked that same blue jig. In fact, all but a couple of my crappies ate the blue too. Is Blue Wednesday differment than Blue Monday?[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Saw some guys in a bass boat that had slipped into an empty spot at the private docks and were using long rods to dunk the crappies. I saw them bring in a couple from under the boats and they said they had limited as they went by me later.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Not sure how many crappies I brought in today. I only kept about 6, for my sis in law who loves white bass and crappies. TubeBabe is still in Arizona so one wiper and one kitty will make a couple of meals for me. [/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]More than half of the crappies I caught were "underfooters"...9-10 inches or so. But there were several "footlongs", a few 13 inchers and my biggest at about 14 inches. FlyGoddess reported that she had measured one from outside the harbor that tagged out at about 15 inches. Those are some nice crappies in Utah. We done good.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]We both had other things to do early so we bugged out before noon. Still no wind. Just a light ripple. I hate it when the weather forecast is wrong. RIGHT.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Met a guy at the fillet station that said he found a spot that he "couldn't keep the walleye off". I clued him in on the crappies and he divulged his walleye spot. Now I got a reason for coming back. Also, I don't need any of the excuses I was hatching up to explain the smell of skunk. I just can't find no skunks no mo. Poor me.[/#0000ff]

Wow... looks like a pretty stellar day. Congrats on the nice fish.

See any bank tanglers putting the hurt on some fish?

Re: [Flycasting] North Marina - No Excuses - TubeDude - 06-15-2011

[cool][#0000ff]Last week they were doing fairly well in a couple of spots...both crappies and small wipers. But today the water had dropped a ways and the fish seemed to be out in deeper water. Saw a few folks fish for a while and then move or leave. That is usually a sign that not much is happening...or that they got quick limits.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]FlyGoddess said she was getting most of hers near the bottom on deep flies...sinking lines. I also got most of my bigger fish right near the bottom in 12 to 13 feet...with finesse jiggles. But I also reeled up to small schools I saw at middepth on sonar a couple of times and got bit. Sonar was definitely a big help in finding and catching.[/#0000ff]

Re: [TubeDude] North Marina - No Excuses - flygoddess - 06-15-2011

Okay, I am accepting these nuclear Chernobyl Crappie...what a riot!
So I move over toward TD to show him the big one at that time. While lifting it up he says calmly, I have a fish on......pulls and tugs and there is this NICE 22 or 24 inch thick Wiper. I didn't have the heart to tell him, that was mine but it got Confused on what lure to take...[laugh][laugh][laugh]

Now those who have actually met Pat realize his hands are the size of 12" fry pans!

I seriously lost count, and I know some of you are thinking I am nuts to return all of them but I really have no idea how to cook them and was unprepared to transport them.
I went with a Type II line and I had about 50' out so I was close to the bottom in the 13' range. Rigged up with salt and pepper. One White crystal bugger #12 and one Midnight fire #12.....well
[Image: 100_0012.jpg]
Both worked...doubles on one rod twice:

Now the one I had in the picture TD took was a mind blower, but I ventured out to the Green marker and something big hit hard...missed, then a few minutes later another bump (not as hard as the first) and this was at the end

Oh, I did hook a few early on a fast sink line and a bead head Prince Nymph

Thanks again Pat...awesome experience and the fish is GONE..ummmmmm

Again - you guys are the slayers! Wicked fun I'll bet. And hardly even had to motor around.

So boys - Lava/Lunker, when we gonna hit it?

I'm thinking I might (cough cough) be sick on Friday!!!!

Re: [CoyoteSpinner] North Marina - No Excuses - lavaman - 06-15-2011

Coyote, some of us have to work and aren't able to play on the water 4 times per week!

[cool][#0000ff]Don't wish your life away. Take full advantage of all the good stuff along the way...and try to deal with the negative stuff so that it does not spoil your outlook on life. Work hard, take good care of your family and be careful with your income so that there will be something left when you run out of work to do (retire).[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Sounds simple doesn't it? It ain't. Believe me I am properly grateful for the time, health and ability I enjoy these days to spend more time on the water. You wouldn't believe how much I envied others with more fishing time over the years. I'm just glad now that I am still around to take advantage of it.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]You will get there. But it doesn't hurt to keep practicing as much as possible in the meantime.[/#0000ff]

[cool][#0000ff]Sheesh. That's a kinda personal question.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Actually, it is my latest innovation...an extension handle for the electric motor using some cheap blue flex conduit I got at Lowes for $2.98 for 10 feet. This is my second trip with it and it really works great. I will be posting a pictorial soon.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Here's a couple of better pics in the meantime.[/#0000ff]

[#804000]Speaking of personal questions ....... Were you wearing waders today or shorts? Do you still wear the neoprene booties inside your flippers when you wear shorts?[/#804000]

Looks like fun times. Glad you and the Goddess found some willing fish. Those are nice crappie toss in a spare wiper and a cookie kitty not bad for a trip that ended before noon.

Great pics. We dont get to see TD in his tube too often. Usually we just see his hand with a fish in it. Glad you found some fish to play with. 14" crappie are nice fish anywhere in the country. Glad you guys didnt have to use any of those excuses TD thought up.
