The Henry's Fork Has been Awesome! - flyfishingfool - 06-11-2011

I've fished it nearly every day over the past week and a half or so and it has been great to say the least. Here are a few pictures of some nice fish still swimming around out there.

Glad to see someone is catching on a river! How off color is it? Are you using rubber legs? Thanks for sharing the pictures. Those fish look really nice!

Thanks guys. Water clarity has been half decent. Yesterday was a lot more off color but the fishing was a little better. Today was ok but not great. Ive been throwing rubber legs dropping a san juan. They are mostly eating the worm fly

Wondering if you've heard any report about the Ashton Res. There are some big pigs in there like the state record german brown a couple of years ago but have never had much luck there except with chubs and small trout. Mornings and Sundays are the best time to escape the water skiers and the hard bodies.

I have not heard any reports on how its fishing. I know that it has a,lot of nice browns in it though. sorry about my lack of help. I do know the henrys fork is still awesome. Caught 4 fish in about 30 mins today before the lightning ran us off. one being a nice 21" or bigger rainbow

I heard they're doing repairs to the Ashton dam this year and have basically drained it..

Can anyone back that up?

What are conditions like from the dam downstream, flyfishingfool? Is it fishable there or do you have to hit up above the dam? I'm going to try and get up there this afternoon or tomorrow afternoon with my wife to see if we can get her into some fish. If you're working, maybe we'll stop by on our way through...

Ashton reservoir still has tons of water in it. They will be draining it to river bed level to work on the dam. As far as conditions, they were pretty decent overall. River levels are up a little today but still very fishable and wadeable. Ive got the next two days off and will be doing a lot of fishing in the area. Maybe ill see you out on the river.

i just got back from doing a project on the cabin in island park the HF is big but clear and i watched a couple of guys in a drift boat nail a bunch on salmon flys. the falls river is flowing mud so the whole river below that is just chocolate milk and huge

I also headed up to check the Henry's Fork today, but only went to Chester. The dam is closed off d/t construction on the hydroelectric project. There is room to launch a drift boat below the dam and you can still access the ramp above the dam. Either way the water was all chocolate milk and running fast.

I headed up to Ashton with my wife and we fished the Henry's Fork also. We started below the dam, but levels were a lot higher than I was expecting. My wife doesn't have waders so it made access difficult for us.

We hopped back in the car and headed up to Fishman's Lane, right where the highway passes over the river before heading up to Island Park. We didn't touch a fish in the 3 hours we were there. At first we tried nymphing, dropping various beadheads off of a rubber legs. Nothing. We saw several NICE fish rising occasionally. The only thing coming off were small, small caddis. So we tried throwing a small parachute adams. Nothing. 4-5 drift boats came cruising by; some were nymphing, others stripping streamers, and some were throwing salmon flies. So we switched to a salmon fly pattern and tried to entice those big trout to rise again. Again, nothing! I had a few different patterns, too, and we couldn't convince 'em. Oh the joys of fly fishing! Any advice, though, on what we might do differently next time we head up that direction? I'm stumped. I guess I should have brought the proverbial kitchen sink!

Today was really toughbecause the flows were all over the place and up a lot from yesterday. We floated ora to chester and only picked up one trout and missed a few others. I also wade fished the warm river to ashton stretch and picked up a few whities. wooly bugger and small hares ear workef decently. Next time your up maybe try down by vernon. Its a lot easier to fish from the shoreline than by the dam and can be a lot of fun.
