solo tubin UL knolls 5-25-11 - albinotrout - 05-25-2011
Decided I had to get out today to enjoy the nice weather before it started raining again. Hit the knolls at Utah Lake. Hit the water at 7 am, first fish at 7:44 am. Water temp was a cool 56, warmed up by 11 am to 59. It was a day full of white bass. Fishing was slow until the water temps came up then it was hard to keep the fish off the hook. In fact I think I even caught the same fish twice. I took the hook out and threw it back in the same time I threw my jig back in (both in the same location[cool]) and instant hook up. Same size fish too. I finally left around 1 pm after haveing too much fun in the sun. Noticed a fellow tuber got on the water around 10ish. Couldn't help notice the mods to his ODC tube. Had a motor on it. Immediate thoughts he had visited TD's tubatorium. Heres a couple of pics I took.

Nice fish but I couldn't help but think, "my, what big eyes you have!".
As far as the tube guy with the trolling motor, isn't that cheating?

I think he needs to see TD. He really needs those bumpers, the back is definitely on the LOW side. Plus looking at his motor. He has it kicked up, but looking at the motor bolts, to put it down, it would be underneath him shooting down. He needs to try to get that motor more level.
I have a problem on my Renegade sometimes of getting the motor straight up and down only, in my case the motor kicks out a little. in the straight position.

When he first got on I was looking at his craft and thinking that looks a little different. Leans too far back. Not sure with what or how he had attached the motor mount.

Well you've got those rigged pretty good, I must say. I guess I'm just really "old" school. I've been looking at a fishin' buddy and thinking, "do I really need electronic help to find fish?", but to add a motor, I'm just not there yet.
The advantages are obvious and my kicking around in my fins can get old, like me, but I keep telling myself it's not the fish but the exercise I need.
Of course my wife thinks I'm half crazy, most of the time.

I started with a fishin buddy back in the late 90's. Just upgraded last year to a humminbird 565. Mamatrout and my son use a fishing buddy 110 and my old fishing buddy 3.

I can see going with the basics.
Different type of fishing require different tactics. I fish suspended off the bottom. Now to know where that is, I could attach a weight, and drop my line down, marking when it hits bottom and adjust from there, and I have done that, but contour bottom, or wind can change all of that.
Plus nice to know if there is a submerged tree.
Sonar doesn't make catching any easier, just shows you where they are and what else is there. In fact, sometimes they can be down right frustrating in that you see fish, but you have thrown everything but the kitchen sink to no avail.
Motor on the other hand opens up new spots. But, you still have to work for it. Most use the motor to get from point A to point B from which you turn the motor off and kick or anchor. I guess some use them to troll, and I do have m,y line out while I am moving, but that too is a great way to find fish. Be it a motor or the wind, both move you, just, with a motor, you control how much.
Tubes where designed for easy packing to remote places and pontoons for big waters and rivers, but when you only own one or the other, you make it work.

The floattubes are light and easy to pack in a car. They are great with just fins on a small lake, but here in Idaho we have some bigger lakes with some really big wind at times.
I first put a motor on my tube to allow me to continue fishing in spite of a breathing problem that periodically hampers my activity level.
Since putting a motor on, I have also found how great they are to extend my fishing range. I might go a lot further, and worry less about being blown clear across the lake in a day.
I generally use the motor to move to an area and to get back in against the wind etc. When I am actively fishing an area I just use my fins. But as I am not getting younger every year I appreciate having that option of the motor assist there and available to me.
I think the motors on the float tubes have allowed a number of people to continue fishing and stay safer than before.
