Kokanee on the fly - downed_Phly - 05-24-2011

Anyone have any experience going after Kokanee on a fly rod? Is it even possible or are they usually too deep? I suppose you might be able to catch them in a few streams too, but I really have no idea. Any info is much appreciated. [Wink]

A friend of mine's dad likes to run a fly rod on a downrigger when he's trolling. It seems and sounds silly, but I tell you whut, it sure was fun fighting that koke on a fly rod!
and, it tasted awesome!

Maybe he should look at Mooching instead. That is made for what he is doing.
Yes it is possible to catch Koke on a fly. Larry Tullis has developed some zooplankton
fly. Easy enough to make. Make a seal bugger and dab the ends with T-Shirt paint.
I caught a nice SILVERY one one time by accident. Black woolly bugger and Depth Charge 250 grain line.

How deep did you catch yours? At the Berry?

I was in the bay at Renegade, it was I think 80' deep and I wad using a fast sink line with almost all out so I am guessing I was maybe 50' to 60' deep.

Wow. I don't think I have ever fished deeper than 50' on a fly rod. That's pretty cool!

I have let line out to maybe two turns left on the reel, and I know it isn't straight down, unless glass smooth and I don't touch it, so I am guessing with the fast sink line I must be at that 50' mark but I guess no way to tell.
Now setting the hook with that much line out is another story[crazy][cool]
