Help with Gear Selection! - wasontilt - 05-10-2011

I basically need some help in selecting some equipment...

I already own about 3 different types of Ugly Sticks and a few small spinning reels.

I need to beef up my reels and lines.

Fishing : Mostly Fresh Water - (Northern Pikes, Largemount Bass, etc.) Occasional Salt Water

I'm interested in purchasing:

Penn Fierce 4000
- Mono Trilene XL 12 lb

Penn Fierce 5000
- P-Line Floroclear Fishing Line 15 lb

I usually fish when we go to the Adirondacks in NY.

This will basically be the only fishing gear I would be using. ( I fish for pleasure only about 5 - 10 times a year)

Will this set-up do or should I change anything?

Equipment will be used by a 50, 23, and 11 year old males.

Any feedback and suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Pline is one of my favorites. I use it on two of my bass rods. I use 8lb Fireline on alot of my rods and they bring in all my bass and Pike, if the tooth ones don't bite it off.[Wink]

I like the Penn Sargus spinning reels. I've got one I use for bream and bass, and i've got the larger version I use in saltwater for grouper and snapper. Very tough and versitile reels.

As for line, I like braid. I recommend Power Pro or Suffix braid. The trick is to albright on a strip of actual fluorocarbon leader, so you get the advantages of the fluoro and the braid, with a wind on leader set up. It's the only way I fish. The only time I don't use braid, is on my bream rig and on my saltwater trolling gear.
