Lake Lowell - Monday 4/18 - SmartWeed - 04-19-2011 It was amazing what a few half days of sun did to water temperatures on Lake Lowell. Friday the warmest water I could find was right at 50 degrees. Today, the sun broke out just after lunch and I headed for the ramp. When I turned on my depth finder I read 53 degrees at the launch ramp. I decided to head for some shallow flats to see if any fish had moved into really shallow water. As I pulled into an open flat I found water temperatures to be 57-59 degrees and the fish were there. I covered the water very thoroughly several times and ended up catching 17 very fat largemouth between 12-17”. It was a great afternoon. I was planning to head for another flat, but the lake was rolling in whitecaps, so I called it an afternoon. I had fished for 2-½ hours and found fish in water from 6” to 3’. Best baits for me were a Black/Blue Chatterbait, a pearl Swimming Senko, and blue/black flake 4” Yum Wooly Curltail (no longer made). However, I believe they could have been caught on almost anything that was presented properly, for the fish were very active. You should be able to get them at almost any shop in Idaho. There are lots of copies and knock-offs, but I still prefer the original. They also come in all sizes now days, from 1/8 oz. on up to Musky size. [signature] Re: [forgiven] Lake Lowell - Monday 4/18 - SmartWeed - 04-20-2011 What we need is warm nights. Last night was 25 degrees, and although it warmed up this afternoon, the water temps had dropped 4-5 degrees today (Tuesday). I found a few fish, one a nice 17" fat fish, but it was no where near as good as yesterday - at least for me. I have never been there but I am thinking about going in there with either my tube or my inflatable pontoon which would be better for that launch area? I am thinking about doing some catfishing there until the river settles down a bit. Ron [signature] Re: [idahoron] Lake Lowell - Monday 4/18 - SmartWeed - 04-20-2011 Ron, that ramp is where I put in at this time of year. When the lake drops to summer levels (usually July or August), they put a cable across it. You could still launch a pontoon boat even then. And yes, it is at Access Area #1. The locals call the place "Akies", as many years ago there was a boat rental in that area run by a guy name Akie. Planning on going back out on Saturday and will hopefully have some of your luck! [signature] |
