I highly recommend joining in...it's a blast! A great way to get some good use out of your 8# rods if you haven't had a chance to get a steelie or salmon beat you up. I've had these things come out of the water ! We're talking 12# average with many over 20#s![cool][cool][cool]

I wish it was not flyfishing only I think they would get a lot bigger turn out and put a bigger dent in the Carp population . Curt G.

Agreed (curt69). They should do 3 categories so that the fly fishermen still have their niche. Bow-fishing could be a category and then the third one would be fishing other than fly fishing. That third category could include snagging, bait and everything else. It might be necessary to divide the reservoir up so that the fly fishermen didn't get their feathers ruffled -- so to speak. While I have not caught a carp on a fly rod, I do fly fish on occasion. I have caught several carp with my bass grub so I know a little about the vulnerabilities there. The bottom line (IMHO) is that when carp are spawning, the fly fishing method is not going to be as effective as the other methods. On the other hand, none of the methods will control the population so it may be that the real interest is in the sport rather than population control.

I participated in a carp tournament last year for Alexander Reservoir and the Portneuf that allowed harvest by any means. I don't recall the sponsor nor time period but remember checking my fish at the Rimrock Bar in Pocatello. It would be nice to have such a contest -- maybe geared for all of the SE Idaho locations, or possibly the entire state.....

And one more thing while I have everyones attention. The Fish and Game does not allow state records for carp when harvested by bow and arrow. Why not allow the record -- but as a separate category?

That last paragraph isn't true the last three state records for carp. Rob James, Jake rife and Jake hyer all took their fish with a bow.

I do agree with having 3 separate categories probably get a lot bigger turnout.

Re: [FNA] Carp Classic 7 - fishingrocket - 04-19-2011

Thanks FNA. I stand corrected.

P.S. I got my information from a friend of mine. He and his buddies have shot carp in the 40 to 50 pound range on more occasions than one but several years ago. The F & G refused to count their records. It may have been just a communication problem but my source is credible.

No worries, I just wanted readers to know they will get credit for breaking the record with there bows. A little more incentive to get out and shoot em!

Re: [EddieFish] Carp Classic 7 - Mojo1 - 04-20-2011

Seems interesting to me that most of the carp pics I see from Blackfoot are of Mirror Carp. Is that what is mostly in there or are they just easier to get (more aggressive) on fly-rods?

Re: [Mojo1] Carp Classic 7 - ChrisTheFish - 04-21-2011

There are only mirror carp in Blackfoot res.

I'm wondering, how many people are planning on doing this from BFT?

I'm strongly considering it, just not entirely decided as of yet.
