Probably not as effective as a simple spoon, or something shiney, that matches the silversides or other small baitfish they normally feed on. Not saying they won't catch fish, probably just not the best tool for the job.

You could try it. The only thing that would work against you is the weight of the lure. You can't run the boat up on top of the bonita, or they will dive and pop up somewhere else, farther away from your boat. So, you need a lure that has enough weight to be casted a long distance.
