Sand Bass Fishing off Hunington - BFFG - 09-05-2003 I recently went fishing on the LONG BEACH MARINA SPORT FISHING BOAT which took me off hunington peir, and would like to report that the fishing is excellent. About 40 Bass were caught. I caught a six pound, a four pound, and a two pound bass. Live squid seemed to be the hot bait to use. I set up my rod with a small rubbercore sinker and let the bait swim. I never have fished with live squid myself? Are they hard to hook on?[/size] [size 2] I have always used Sardines or Anchovies which work. I fish the local bays alot in OC and squid strips seem to be working pretty good right now for bass and halibut [cool][/size] [size 2] Congrats on fishing and good luck in future[/size] [signature] Re: [fishfather] Sand Bass Fishing off Hunington - BFFG - 09-06-2003 In answer to your question, its not very hard to hook the live squid on. I just hook it through the end with the fins or flaps. The boat I went on also had live anchovy and sardines for bait and I caught some fish on those too. good luck on your fishing too. thanks for replying. Didn't any of them try to grab you with their tenticles. Let them get a good hold on you and you're gonna be in a world of hurt! They have a beak and when they bite you they cut a triangular cut about an 1/8 inch deep. Were you fishing with fresh dead? Anyway, for bigger fish, you triple hook them starting from the tip of their tail pin then again and finally once more making sure the hook is only 1/3 down the body of the squid. With the triple hook you can cast them a good distance and soak your bait without worry of it accidently coming off. I stab my fingers enough times just putting the bait on. No, these weren't fresh dead. The front bait tank on the boat was full of them and they were swimming around happy as could be. This was my first trip when live squid was actually available. I don't know if it was a just one time thing or not. I hope it wasn't. oh, and thanks for the tip on how to triple hook the squid. There is enough fish I am going to catch that will spine me, bite me, whatever![shocked][/size] [signature] Re: [fishfather] Sand Bass Fishing off Hunington - davetclown - 09-10-2003 you will have to swich over to leaches, they dont bite[angelic] do they have salt water leaches, any one know? And how to replace it with a picture of a fish.
