The Greatest Fish--in tropical weather - Tarponjim - 02-24-2011 I just returned from paradise, this time in Campeche, Mexico. "Baby" tarpon were the quarry. They really cooperated with the program. I find the smaller, 5-25 pound tarpon much more satisfying and enjoyable than the monsters. They're the greatest game fish on the planet, according to me anyway.[laugh] I never take many pictures or keep close counts, but one day I jumped 30 according to my guide. Another day I never had a bite. The rest were in between. Like I said, tarpon fishing.[crazy] I used Clousers, Deceivers, and Toads on an 8-wt with floating line. Most of the takes were less than a foot under the surface, and some took the fly as it landed. Here's a couple of teasers. [inline "creek baby-2.JPG"] This is a "baby" like many I caught in the small creeks. [inline "offshore large.JPG"] This is a larger fish found offshore of the mangroves. Most tarpon were somewhere in between the sizes of these two. Weather was sunny and 75-90. I have a full detailed report on my website, and most of you know how to find it. You know, that Fishflaminggorge place![ ![]() Riverdog: Thanks for your help. All went very smooth! Anyways looks like a great time and glad the fish were cooperative!!! Hopefully they will cooperating for us in a month[laugh] Remo [signature] Re: [Tarponjim] The Greatest Fish--in tropical weather - riverdog - 02-24-2011 Glad to hear the trip went well. My son and I made a quick spur of the moment trip to the glades last weekend. The weather cooperated so we kayaked out to Cape Sable for a couple days. Seeing 2 dozen 50 lb + tarpon jumping out of the water right off that corner had me wondering how your fishing was going. I didn't fish for tarpon this trip but sign me up for next winter. Mike maybe we should reserve a spot for next January, what do you say?
