pregnant sturgeon - idahofish17 - 01-24-2011

Today fishing i caught a pregnant sturgeon. This is good news because ive heard that the sturgeon dont really spawn because of all the dams. Glad to see that the sturgeon can re populate around here.

I know they do as i have seen tiny sturgeon below bliss dam and my dad has caught quite a few trout around gifford springs that have had black eggs in them

I was fishing the hagerman area.
And yes i have caught small ones before too but they also stock the river with small sturgeon so i never know if its from the sturgeon or a stocked fish.

But they don't stock anything under 15 inches most are closer to two foot, I have seen several under a foot

Were you there on Friday? I talked to some guys down there. Just a question Why did you think it was pregnant?

Re: [idahoron] pregnant sturgeon - thebug - 01-24-2011

in june of last year i caught a 6 incher near buhl so i know there is some breading going on. Plus the bliss to strike and hells canyon stretches have healthy breading populations in them. According to what i have read by the F&G and ida pwr the stretch from Shoshone to thousand springs starting in 2001 the stocked sturgeon should have reached sexual maturity and should have begun spawning. Also according to stocking records from the F&G website from 2001 to 2010 only 49 sturgeon (they were adults) were released in the snake river in the magic valley region. and 11 more were released in Riley creek at the fish hatchery

No sunday. And i wasnt below the dam, not that far into almost buhl-hagerman.
How big the belly was on this thing. You could just tell. When we saw it jump we thought it was going to be 9ft+ because of how big it was. But when we got it in it was just a little over 7ft but the belly was huggeeeee. I though it would be important to take the length of it too see when they are spawning around here, and give that info to the IDFG. We released it as soon as possible.

That would be a hoot watching you unhook a 6 incher without removing it from the water. Bet that was a cute little bugger.
