I don't know for sure but if Rigby lake and Rexburg ponds have safeish ice then Mud Lake should. Also Roberts Gravel pond is probably fishable. After this warm weather and rain we've had I think I'll wait till next weekend to try them out.

I'm almost certain Mud Lake would have ice. The question is does it have any fish? Last 2-3 years of reports have said that it is essentially barren of fish. If anyone finds out one way or another please share.

Here is the report from my trip to mud lake on Saturday.

We only fished for about 3 hours or so and between my Dad and I, we caught 7 fish. Not the normal numbers that you can get at mud lake, but the fish all had a good size. The smallest was 8.5 inches and I lost one in the hole that was good sized.

Good news there are some in there. Thanks. Can you say how many yards off of the bank you were fishing. Was it clear out in the middle?

It was probably about a third of the way out. I drilled about 15 holes or so to try and find a spot without weeds, but ended up fishing in the weeds a little bit because there was not much action elsewhere. Another observation is that the water was merky. I know that it is often merky, but it was milky rather than brown or green. I suspect that if the water were more clear that the fishing would be better.

What kind of fish were you catching and what kind of fish are left in Mud Lake?

Yellow perch. I have also caught chubs and a couple of trout near the inlet, but I am not sure what is still in there other than perch. I know that at one point there were bass and I think muskie, but I have not heard of anyone catching any for the last few years.

Thanks for the report!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Weeds are a good thing! Without weeds the bottom looks like a moonscape and the fish are few and far between!

Thanks for the report. That's the best report I've heard since 2007!
