Rexburg Nature Pond Report - OvidCreek - 12-03-2010

Fished the small community pond from 4:45-5:15 and iced four small trout. Ice is 4-5'' and solid. Should be a fast little fishery for the next few weeks. Missed several bites and even had fish hitting green padlebug with no bait. If you have kids this may be a fun place to go.

My wife says I act like a kid...does this count?

Since I have never been ice fishing this might be a good place to start...do you mind sharing what you used?

The Rexburg Pond is a good place to start. Go with small jigs tipped with a piece of mealworm. Find the deepest holes. There are only a couple of them and usually they are only like 5' deep.

Thanks for the advice. I guess I need to find an auger and get out there.

Most ice fishermen will drill you a few holes if you ask.

My first time out I thought I was going to cut through the ice with a hatchet! Boy, was I wrong. The ice turned out to be over 20 inches. Luckily some guys with an auger let me borrow it to save my day.

I agree, most will help out someone just getting started. Some might not, though.

The problem is finding people at the Nature Pond when you can go. Sorry I am so busy or I would meet you over there.

Maybe in the future we could meet up.

Well I am only going to be in town for about 2 more weeks then I am headed to the fly fishing Mecca for a few months (Montana). I will just drive by and see if anyone left a hole in the ice for me. If not I guess i will have to wait another year.

If it is not too cold, you can often kick in an old hole with your foot.

If you have any sort of crow or wreking bar you should be able to use my three holes. Even a tire iron should do it. I saw no evidence of anyone ice fishing there besides me, so these may be the only three holes you find. I would go over; I bet you will have a nce afternoon.

I will probably give it a try tomorrow (Saturday). I am busy in the morning but I will try and run over there around noon. I will take my hatchet and try to find the holes and open them back up.
