SD floating - Ggiannig89 - 10-28-2010

Hey im new to float tubing, i like fishing the bays with live bait... so my question is are there alot of float tubers in the sandiego area that fish the bays? i have never seen anyone else. and also i have seen a few things where people launch off the beach, that seems a little scary to me but i would be willing to give it a try with someone who is a little more experienced in that field, thanks.

[cool][#0000ff]Welcome aboard. Lots of good tubing in the SD area...but mostly "inside". We don't have a lot of BFTers who tube it but there are a few. Probably more guys hit those waters from kayaks and toons. A bit safer and you can cover more water...especially in wind and current.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]You can launch off the beach in some spots, when it is low surf conditions. Better yet, find a place where a pier or breakwater knocks down the waves so you can get out. A line of kelp offshore can also lighten the wave action. Just be watchful of tides and weather changes. Things can go bad if you get stuck out beyond the breakers and they jump up too high. Float tubes are for fishing...not surfing.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Lots of good halibut and bass action in both Mission Bay and SD harbor. But you sometimes have to work to find the fish and watch out for the big boats. Be sure to time it so you go one way on an incoming tide and back to your launch spot on the outgoing...or vice versa.[/#0000ff]

I have tubed both SD Bay and Mission Bay in the past, but not so much lately. I've been thinking about giving it a try again. It can be pretty fun.

I haven't tried launching in the surf, but have thought about that as well. It can definitely be done, but you just have to be careful about the conditions.
