Steelies in Kooskia? - mikkfin80 - 10-11-2010

I will be headed up to Kooskia in about a week to do some deer hunting. I was wondering if anyone could tell me if the Steelhead are up the river that far yet. I might drive over to Orofino or Lewiston but it would be cool if I could find some in Kooskia. Any info would be great. Thanks!

I'm heading down Friday!
Here's a report from The Guide Shop in Orofino!

Fish Report 10-9-10
[#800040]Steelhead fishing is pretty good on the Clearwater River. The rain and overcast skies have made fly fishing better. Plugs are still working really well. As soon as the Clearwater River Catch and Keep season opens Oct. 15, bait fishing will be really good too.[/#800040]
[#800040]Fish are throughout the whole system. Some are being caught in the Kamiah area with plugs.[/#800040]

A little early for Kooskia....I would not call it a waste of time though...caught them in that area this time of year before...just saying there are better times to fish that area,

the fish are barely starting to show up at oriphino in good numbers i was there today and talked to a few guys that were on the river and they said they are just barely starting to get into the fish in that area so i think it will be closer to 2 or 3 weeks or more before they are in the kooskia area i will be fishing tomorrow and wednesday. i will have a full report for you guys.

Thanks for the help guys and I hope you can all get into the fish soon! I hope I can get over to Orophino while I am up there. I am actually more excited about steel head fishing than whitetail hunting. My brother-in-law put together the hunting trip and invited me to go. I'm sure it will be fun what ever I end up doing though.

Nice fish osprey02. I gotta get up there! I have a couple questions and if you can answer them I would greatly appreciate it. I've never fished on the Clearwater and don't have a boat. Is there any places that would be worth fishing from the shore? Also, I usually bottom bounce bait and flys for steelhead on the Salmon. Will that do any good up there or should I try something else? You can pm me if you would like. Any help would be awesome! Thanks.

[Image: happy.gif]bobbers and shrimp chunks on a dark and light jig about 8ft down on the slip! The north fork is mostly all shore fishing once you make it down the bank!

we're going to go do some skating on the middle fork today, gunna try out a new 13ft spey

Re: [chrome_junky] Steelies in Kooskia? - osprey02 - 10-17-2010

ya pretty slow with moss on the bolders in the bottom!
Bobbers or spoons and spinners, I've never seen anyone mooch or bottom bounce with any luck

And yeppers, my son and I each landed a keeper by skating, 2 out of 7 strikes Ain't half bad and there just can't be a more adrenaline causing act in life than to have a huge hole in the river open up right in front of you! I think I might of even peed myself a little, but don't tell anyone![Wink]

Re: [osprey02] Steelies in Kooskia? - Mojo1 - 10-17-2010

Awesome!

I had one chase my fly 2 years ago by Cherry Lane that had it's nose out of the water for what seemed like 30 seconds. Of course as soon as it started to close on the fly I jerked it out of it's mouth. Classic!

Re: [osprey02] Steelies in Kooskia? - chrome_junky - 10-18-2010

do you just cast and retreive the spoons and spinner or are you letting them role through with the current? i imagine the first because of the lack of current.
