Drifting a dry fly down stream - JLG78 - 09-23-2010
Kind of stumbled on this in the last month or so.... .totally by accident i figured out that by drifting my fly down stream while keeping my line tight and as high out of the water as i can. i let it drift a few feet then tug on it a few times then let it drift again.the fly kinda skates on the top of the water and dips just below the surface and they just nail it! it's becoming my go to technique when there not surfacing. seems to work best with a small caddis in faster water. Not sure why it works? But for me it has.

Or you might think about TENKARA fishing.

It works well because the real caddis fly will also get pushed underwater in those conditions. I find that technique also works well with larger flies and exceptional well with terrestial patterns.
Didn't you make it down to Zion yet? If so any luck?

Thanks for the links. Tenkara looks awesome! would be perfect since I usually fish the tight overgrown sections in Ogden canyon. btw...I still have that camo furled leader on my line. i dread the day i get it tangled in a tree.

Never made it down to Zion. Work got really slow had to cancel. SOOO bummed......
+1 about the terrestrials. Went to Black Smith just before labor day. Same technique with a foam hopper. those browns were hitting it so F#!&ing hard! Never experienced anything quite like it. Can't say i landed a ton of them but it looked like shark week.!

I've been out twice now with my 12' tenkara and have focused most of my attention on casting upstream to tight holding spots and getting good drag free drifts due to keeping all the line off the water. So far it's been a lot of fun. There were a couple of spots on the middle Provo the other day that I just couldn't seem to get positioned right from below to work a rising fish-- I look forward to trying this technique this weekend from above.
And regarding the floss line technique--I've always hated fishing still water in the wind but maybe now that will change.
