Sunday we rode our horses into Pali
es Lakes here in Eastern Idaho. The Lakes are in the Swan Valley section of the South Fork of the Snake River. From the trailhead it is 6 or 7 miles into the lower lake, and another two miles or so into the Upper Lake. I was so busy looking at all the beautiful country I didn't worry much about the miles going in. It really is a great ride, hike, mountain bike trail. We stopped and fished the lower lake on the way in. it's kinda hard to access with out a tube (that,s going to be our next trip in.) lots of smaller cuts. We had to wait for Mrs. Moose and her kids to clear the trail just up from the lower lake, Moose and horse don't mix well. We made our way into the upper lake. It's about three to four times the size of the lower lake. The fishing is a little more tough there but the access is much better. We had hoped to stay the night but the weather was alittle rough so we decided to ride back out after lunch. The highlight of our trip out is we spotted a blackbear (accually a real brown color) about 200 yards away in the creek. We got a good look at him through out field glasses then he got wind of us and hit the road. All in all it was a great day and one well spent in the outdoors with my kids. Thanks, nice report! It certainly wasn't too long at all. I really enjoy posts with some detail and sidelights. They are much more interesting than "Went to Blah Blah Lake and caught two"!!
I have looked at the trail to Pali
e Lakes, but haven't gotten there yet. Sounds like when we do go, we may have to pack some tubes in too.[signature]

Beautiful lake. Looks like a great 2 day back packing excursion. Any idea what the elevation gain is from trail head to lower lake and from lower lake to upper lake? I no longer have horses and must carry my tube on my back so these things matter - especially at my age! Thanks for the report.

Elevation at trailhead is 5545ft. Lower Lake is 6136 ft.
Upper is 6637 ft.

Also the distance from the campground to the lower lake is 5 or 5 1/2 miles. The upper lake is 6 1/2 to 7 miles from the trailhead. Most the elevation gain is the last 1/2 mile where you cross the creek up to the upper lake. Never been there this late in the year but the secret is spinners in summer months.
