Inflating Tube - eDUBz - 08-03-2010

Some already know I just bought my tube (fish cat 4) and was wondering when inflating how stiff does it need to be? or should be...
I don't want to under or over inflate.

If you don't have a gauge........make it firm but not
rock hard. You will get it after couple of times.
Also remember that air will expand a lot when the tube
is on full sun so you may have to let some air out
in mid day.
Also elevation makes a big difference.
You will figure it out as you go, no worries.
Hope this helps.

This time of year, the tube could feel full but the cooler water can make it feel a little softer.

One more thing- I do carry a small pump with me
just in case.............
When Im tubing in Sierras the water is sometimes
very cold. I would pump up my tube, put it in water,
tube for some time and guess what- need more air.
So I just get to shore and put few more pumps in it
and Im good to go.
Then the sun comes up and guess what- need to let some air out.
I just squeez the "nose'' of the tube and I know what
it needs.
You will know as well after few times out.

Ya, I have inflated mine around 4pm and stayed out until after dark a couple of times. Both times I didn't carry a pump and I was sorry both times. If I fill it early in the day I never have a problem. I try to keep mine so that I can squeeze it and it will give a little bit. When the water cools and the air cools more the tube will sag a bit.
