SF Salmon close on 7-9? - Perry3 - 07-09-2010 Hate to be the bearer of bad news but just heard it on the evening news. Hopefully can catch some people before they head up for the weekend. Bought my tag yesterday and have my pickup loaded and ready to go after work tomorrow. Is Riggins still worth a shot? Idaho Department of Fish and Game creel surveys of anglers on the South Fork Salmon indicate 100 percent of the state's share of the fishery will have been taken by Friday night. A closure order has been signed by Fish and Game Director Cal Groen. Idaho's sport fishery on the South Fork Salmon is allowed a harvest of 2,975 adult hatchery Chinook this year. Fisheries Bureau staff note that the harvest came mostly in a few days this year because high water prevented salmon from coming up the river in the early part of the season that began June 12. Once the water cleared just before the July 4 holiday weekend, the fish charged upriver where sport anglers were waiting. Sampled anglers since July 4 have reported the success rate of less than four hours fished per Chinook salmon caught and kept. The numbers just don't add up. Maybe their volunteers doing the surveys have a hidden agenda?? I don't know but just saying. [signature] Re: [DowntownBrowns] SF Salmon close on 7-9? - phutch30 - 07-10-2010 I went over for friday. we fished daylight to dark. Having never been there it was a trip. I got one at first light high up in the drainage when a pod moved into the tial of the pool I was fishing. Then it died. I got two more spaced about 6 hours apart lower down. All three were nice fish in the 12-15lb range and two were surprisingly bright fish. The other two people who went never touched a fish. Considering the effort we put in I though it was really slow. I saw a fair number of fish (50-60) moving up river in the morning but nothing in the afternoon. People were catching a few but nothing like the reports indicated. So basically most of those were caught in about a 7-9 day stretch. Now that seems more than strange, that seems downright impossible. That's about 750 fish per day. [signature] Re: [DowntownBrowns] SF Salmon close on 7-9? - PERRY04 - 07-14-2010 you might say that sounds a bit "fishy". pun intended. its a real drag they cut it so short. seems like it closed just as soon as it opened. had a trip planned out to go but they closed it that friday before we took up.[mad] [signature] Re: [PERRY04] SF Salmon close on 7-9? - AverysAdventure - 07-14-2010 Cumulative Chinook Salmon Hatchery Returns Unfortunately, there's currently no data available due to technical difficulties. Main topic- creel counting and catch estimation. [signature] |
