sand hallow and hermosa beach pier cali - montananinnv - 07-07-2010

its been awhile since i posted anything or even signed on. we went to sand hallow about a 3 weeks ago. it was super windy so we couldnt get out in the raft but i waded out deep and casted a senko worm and hooked up and landed one decent bass. and yesterday we went to california to visit my mom, she works for Boeing in seattle and got sent to cali to help test the 747-8 freighter plane and had a day off so we went to the beach and i brought some poles. we only caught one little fish, but it gave birth to 3 live baby fish while i was holding it, pretty weird. the babies flopped around on the ground before i even know what happened

Thanks for the report. Pretty trippy experiencing a live birth, eh? Any idea what type of fish that was?

yeah it was pretty wild. from what i could tell on the signs on the pier it looks like its called a surf perch but i very well could be wrong. i will look it up more online though.

That is weird, sparked my curiousity. I think it's a Shiner Perch from what I can tell from the pictures and description I found. Did the little ones make it back into the water?

Yeah, it is a type of surf perch. Looked like a shiner surf perch to me. Pretty cool that those surf perch give live birth. Not too common among bony fishes.

yeah i flipped them back in but they floated away. the mom was pretty small so they were tiny and they bounced onto the hard, hot pier before i even knew what happened so they had a rough start. sure something ate them though. we saw a guy catch a big thing that looked like a sting ray but everyone called a guitar fish too. he gutted it and said he was going to slice it into steaks at home. it was probably bout 6-8 pounds, hooked it and fought it for a long time then when it was to the surface they pulled it into a crab pot and yanked it up.

Thanks for the post.

Gee, does that make you a Fish Pediatrician? It had to be a rush to all of a sudden have little fish poppin' out like that.
